List of highest-grossing films in India

The following is a list of highest-grossing films in India, with gross revenue in Indian rupees. This is not an official tracking of figures, as reliable sources that publish data are frequently pressured to increase their estimates.[1] Box office collections have been steadily increasing in the 21st century, the main reasons attributed to the rise in ticket prices, and increase in number of theatres and prints of a film.[2] Most of the highest-grossing films at the domestic box office are Indian films, particularly from Bollywood, the Hindi-language film industry, followed by the Telugu (Tollywood) and the Tamil (Kollywood) film industries. For a list of highest-grossing Indian films worldwide, see List of highest-grossing Indian films.

Overview

The highest-grossing film in India is Baahubali 2: The Conclusion (2017), with a total domestic gross of 1,416.9 crore(US$218 million) .[3] The film broke a number of domestic records,[4] grossing over 415 crore in its opening weekend,[5]. Dangal (2016), which is the highest-grossing Indian film worldwide,[6] was the previous highest-grossing domestic film, with a domestic gross of 562.52 crore [lower-alpha 1].[8] When adjusted for inflation, the highest-grossing film in India is Mughal-e-Azam (1960), with an adjusted domestic gross equivalent to an estimated 2,000 crore in 2017.[lower-alpha 2] It is followed by Sholay (1975),[lower-alpha 3] Baahubali 2: The Conclusion, and then Hum Aapke Hain Koun..! (1994),[lower-alpha 4] each with an adjusted domestic gross exceeding 1,000 crore. In terms of footfalls, the films estimated to have crossed 100 million (10 crore) tickets sold in India are Baahubali 2: The Conclusion[9] and at least one of Mother India, Mughal-e-Azam, and Sholay.[10]

The Indian market is dominated by domestic Indian films, which represented 85% of the country's box office revenue in 2015; this is the highest for a major film market after the United States, where domestic Hollywood films represent 88.8% of its box office revenue.[11] While Indian films remain at the top of the domestic Indian box office, the market for Hollywood films has gradually been growing;[12] the market share of foreign films rose from 8% in 2014 up to 15% in 2015,[13] with Hollywood films representing 10% of the Indian market in 2016[14] and 13% in 2017.[15] The highest-grossing foreign film at the Indian box office is Avengers: Infinity War (2018), with a gross of 294.07 crore(US$43.594 million).[lower-alpha 5]
