Hawaii was admitted to the Union on August 21, 1959 and elects U.S. Senators to Classes 1 and 3. Seven people including only one Republican have served as a U.S. Senator from Hawaii. The state's current U.S. Senators are Democrats Brian Schatz and Mazie Hirono. Hawaii's Class 1 seat is the only in the United States that has always been held by an ethnic minority.

Class 1 U.S. Senators belong to the electoral cycle who were elected for three Congresses in the state's first elections in 1959. The seat in recent years has been contested in 2000, 2006, and 2012. The next election will be in 2018.

Living former Senators

As of June 2018, there are no living former U.S. Senators from Hawaii. The most recent such senator to die was Daniel Akaka (serving 1990–2013), who died on April 6, 2018. Akaka is also the most recently serving Senator from Hawaii to die.
