Location

Bukit Panjang MRT/LRT station (DT1/BP6) is a Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) and Light Rail Transit (LRT) station on the Downtown Line and Bukit Panjang LRT, located on the triple-point boundary of Bukit Panjang, Bukit Batok and Choa Chu Kang, in Singapore.

Primarily serving Bukit Panjang New Town, the Downtown Line station is not linked to the Bukit Panjang LRT station. Passengers transferring between these two services have to exit the former station before entering the latter station, or vice versa. It is considered a "valid transfer" as long as it does not exceed 15 minutes. Passengers are not allowed to top up the travel card at any side to enjoy the same discount. A similar situation exists at Newton MRT station and Tampines MRT station.

The LRT section of this station also provides a separate service that goes to Ten Mile Junction LRT station, in a fashion similar to Promenade MRT station that has both the main Circle Line service and an extension to Marina Bay MRT station. Also at Bukit Panjang's LRT section, there are two services that enter Bukit Panjang New Town: one travels in an anti-clockwise direction starting from Petir LRT Station, while the other travels in a clockwise direction starting from Senja LRT Station.

The station was opened as part of the Bukit Panjang LRT on 6 November 1999.[1]

10,000 regular peak-hour commuters were stranded on the morning of 30 August 2001 because the LRT service was still being repaired after a power failure on the evening of 29 August 2001. An LRT train had hit a switch beam at the Bukit Panjang station at about 5.40 pm on 29 August, resulting in the power failure. It was some 16 hours later before the service resumed at 10.15 am later that day.[2]

On 15 July 2008, when the station locations were revealed for Downtown Line Stage 2, the station is located at the Bukit Panjang Heavy Vehicle Park and the part of Upper Bukit Timah Road between Bukit Panjang Road and Petir Road and named Bukit Panjang MRT station.[3][4] This was in fact that there are technical constraints of building the LRT station or the MRT station that can integrate together, which involves crossovers to Ten Mile Junction LRT Station of which it is 500m nearby. Construction began on 12 January 2010. In the end it was not connected to the Bukit Panjang LRT Line via paid linkways, but it is still an interchange station with the Bukit Panjang LRT Line.[5]

Excavation works for the Downtown Line 2 caused a massive sinkhole on Woodlands Road on 16 March 2013. The construction destabilised the soil, which ruptured an underground water pipe. The rupture which was as wide as one of the road's lanes, appeared near West View Primary School, next to where construction work for Downtown Line 2 is being carried out.[6]

A fire broke out at a construction site for the Downtown Line in the early hours of 9 April 2014. No injuries were reported and the fire was put out in 30 minutes. Thick smoke could be seen from the work site in Bukit Panjang, near shopping mall Junction 10.[7]

In 2015, Platforms 1 and 2 of the LRT had Half-Height Platform Barriers installed. Bukit Panjang (and Choa Chu Kang) was the first to install Half-Height Platform Barriers due to the high commuter traffic when the Downtown Line opens at this station.

Exit C, which was supposed to be opened in December 2016, opened on 10 February 2018.[8] [9]
