BeLeave was a campaign group which campaigned for the United Kingdom's withdrawal from the European Union in the 2016 EU referendum. The group was set up by Darren Grimes.
Allegations & subsequent case against electoral commission
In March 2018 former BeLeave activist Shahmir Sanni claimed that BeLeave was used by Vote Leave to exceed legal spending limits; however, following a High Court of Justice case, the court found that Vote Leave had received illegal and incorrect advice from the UK Electoral Commission. [1][2]
Electoral Commission findings
On 17 July 2018, The Electoral Commission published the conclusions of its investigation into the campaign spending of Vote Leave and it found that Vote Leave and Darren Grimes broke electoral law.[3] However, on 14th September 2018 the High Court found against the Electoral Commission for giving Vote Leave and Darren Grimes of BeLeave incorrect advice.
High Court Of Justice Findings Against Electoral Commission
On September the 14th 2018, the High Court of Justice found against the Electoral Commission, stating that their advice to Vote Leave and Mr Darren Grimes was both incorrect and illegal. Currently, Mr Grimes is appealing the judgement following the High Court's findings.[4]
