Bargarh District is an administrative district of Odisha state in eastern India. The city of Bargarh is its district headquarters. The district was carved out of the erstwhile district of Sambalpur in 1st April, 1993.

Geography

The district has an area of 5832 km². The district of Sambalpur is in the north east, Bolangir & Subarnapur districts are in the south, Nuapada district is in the south west and the state of Chhattisgarh is to its west.

Economy

All-season irrigation from Hirakud dam on the Mahanadi River makes the northern half of Bargarh District rich in agriculture, mostly paddy.[1]

This district is famous for centuries old handloom industry manufacturing a trade-mark textile form called Sambalpuri Saree.

Divisions

Bargarh district consists of two sub-divisions, namely Bargarh & Padampur. It comprises 12 blocks. They are Jharbandh, Paikmal, Padampur, Gaisilet, Bijepur, Sohela, Bhatli, Ambabhona, Barpali, Attabira, Bheden and Bargarh.

Bargarh has also one Municipality consisting Bargarh town having 19 wards and 4 Notified Area Council (NAC). They are Padampur, Barpali, Attabira and newly formed Bijepur.

Demographics

According to the 2011 census Bargarh district has a population of 1,478,833,[2] roughly equal to the nation of Gabon[3] or the US state of Hawaii.[4] This gives it a ranking of 339th in India (out of a total of 640).[2] The district has a population density of 253 inhabitants per square kilometre (660/sq mi) .[2] Its population growth rate over the decade 2001-2011 was 9.84%.[2] Bargarh has a sex ratio of 976 females for every 1000 males,[2] and a literacy rate of 75.16%.[2]

It has a sizeable population of weaver community, some of whom are national awardee and even Padmashree. This district has produced many conspicuous literary prodigies like Gangadhar Meher, Hema Chandra Acharya, Dr. Prafulla Kumar Tripathy and Haldhar Nag.

The people of Bargarh district speak Kosli (Sambalpuri)Odia. In border area of Bargarh people speak in Chhattishgarhi Hindi.

Culture

Bargarh town is situated on the bank of river Jeera. The Howrah-Mumbai National Highway No-6 runs through the town. The town is famous worldwide for a 10-day-long open-air theater drama, Dhanu jatra, based on the life and times of Lord Krishna, culminating in the death of King Kansa.

Though Bargarh is in western odisha Nuakhaiis celebrated in each and every house as a harvesting ceremony. Apart from this Bargarh town organises Shyama Kali Puja every year at Kali Mandir. Dussera, Viswakarma Puja and Ganesh Puja also some important Festival which are observed here.

Bhatli which is 20 k.m. away from district head quarter popularly known as Dadhibaman Khetra or Srikhetra of Western Odisha celebrated Lord Jagannath Rath Yatra which is famous in near by locality.

In Barpali every year Sital Sasthi (marriage ceremony of Lord Shiva and Parvati) is observed which is famous in Odisha.

Baisakh Mela is observed in Nrusinghanath temple every year.

Tourism

There exists a 13th-century temple at Nrusinghanath on the foot hills of Gandhamardan. Lord Vishnu is worshiped here in a feline form, which is the only instance of its kind in the world.The famous kedarnath temple is situated in Ambabhona .Ambabhona is famous for the Debrigarh wildlife sanctuaries which is a best place for visiting where the Barabhakra, Pathraseni situated and the Mahanadi lies on its feet. 6 temples of Astasambhu situated in Bargarh District.

Administration

To reduce increased number of road accidents, Bargarh police administration is one of the first-movers to implement "No Helmet, No Petrol" campaign effective from 01 Sep 2015.[8]
