Etymology

Wasei kango (和製漢語), orthographically borrowed from Japanese  (ぶん) (めい) (bunmei, civilization), which was in turn a semantic readaptation of Chinese 文明 (wénmíng, “elegance and brightness; being civilised and cultured”).
