平板型 (hiragana へいばんがた, rōmaji heiban-gata)

1. (phonetics) monotone type:

   The most common pitch accent pattern in “standard” Japanese or 標 (ひょう)準 (じゅん)語 (ご) (hyōjungo), as used in the mass media, where no syllable is accented: the first syllable has a low pitch and all subsequent syllables have a higher, gradually lowering pitch.

All accent patterns in Japanese may be described as either 平板式 (へいばんしき) (heiban-shiki) or 起 (き)伏式 (ふくしき) (kifuku-shiki). While 起 (き)伏式 (ふくしき) (kifuku-shiki) is further divided into 頭 (あたま)高型 (だかがた) (atamadaka-gata), 中高型 (なかだかがた) (nakadaka-gata), and 尾 (お)高型 (だかがた) (odaka-gata), there are no subcategories to 平板式 (へいばんしき) (heiban-shiki). When contrasting with 頭 (あたま)高型 (だかがた) (atamadaka-gata), 中高型 (なかだかがた) (nakadaka-gata), or 尾 (お)高型 (だかがた) (odaka-gata), it is customary to use the word 平板型 (へいばんがた) (heiban-gata) to avoid the inconsistency of comparing 型 (がた) (-gata) with 式 (しき) (-shiki).
