Etymology

From พงศ (family; genealogy) + อวดาร (avatar: divine descent to the earth); ultimately from वंश (vaṃśa, family; dynasty; genealogy) + अवतार (avatāra, avatar); literally "avatar of (royal) family", based on the old belief that royals were gods incarnate. Cognate with Khmer ពង្សាវតារ (pɔɔngsaawtaa).
