Portuguese

Etymology

From Vulgar Latin *wadaniō, *wadaniāre of Germanic origin[1], from Old Frankish *waithanjan (to pasture, graze, hunt for food), from Proto-Germanic *waiþanjaną, related to Proto-Germanic *waiþiz, *waiþī, *waiþō, *waiþijō (pasture, field, hunting ground); compare Dutch weiden, Old High German weidōn, weidanōn (to hunt, forage for food) (Modern German Weide (pasture)), Old Norse veiða (to catch, hunt), Old English wǣþan (to hunt, chase, pursue). Compare Galician gañar, Catalan guanyar, Occitan ganhar, French gagner, Italian guadagnare, cf. also Spanish ganar. Related to English wathe, wide, and also gain (through Old French).

According to some sources the word possibly entered Portuguese through the intermediate of Old French gaigner[2], but this is unlikely and it probably resulted from a crossing of Old Portuguese gãar (from a separate Germanic (Gothic) root; compare Spanish ganar) with influence from *wadaniare / *waithanjan)[3]. See also Portuguese gadanha.
