Borrowed from Spanish guadaña (scythe), from Gothic 𐍅𐌰𐌹𐌸𐌰𐌽𐌴𐌹𐍃 (waiþaneis), or Frankish *waithanjan (to pasture, forage). Both from Proto-Germanic *waiþō (hunt, pasture, food).
