Proto-Slavic

Etymology

Of uncertain origin; but most likely a ro-extension of *bagati + *-rъ, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *bʰeh₃g-.

Alternatively, from *bʰagʷʰ- (to dip, to soak), with potential cognates in Ancient Greek βάφω (báphō, to paint) and Ancient Greek βάπτω (báptō, to submerge). The later, however, are normally derived from *gʷabʰ-.

It is possible that the particular meaning crimson/purple has been influenced by Oghuric Turkic *baɣur < Proto-Turkic *bakɨr (copper).

Noun

*bãgrъ m [1]

  1. dye
  2. crimson or purple
