Etymology

From Byzantine Greek βάφω, from Ancient Greek βάπτω (báptō) with metaplasm from aorist stem βαψ- according to a common pattern (έβαψα βάφω, έγραψα γράφω).[1] Related to βαφτίζω (vaftízo). Traditionally related to βυθός (vythós), βαθύς (vathýs)[2], although Beekes disagrees (see βυθός (buthós)).
