Kaapse rotszwaluw

De Kaapse rotszwaluw (Ptyonoprogne fuligula) is een vogel uit de familie van zwaluwen (Hirundinidae). Deze soort wordt vaak samen met de vale rotszwaluw (P. obsoleta) als één soort beschouwd. Bijvoorbeeld door BirdLife International en in het Handbook of the Birds of the World (deel 9, 2004).

Kenmerken

De dieren worden 12 tot 15 centimeter groot. De verschillen met de vale rotszwaluw zijn gering. Deze Afrikaanse soort is meestal iets groter en minder vaal van kleur. Vooral de ondersoort P. f. bansoensis: uit Sierra Leone, Nigeria en Kameroen is zeer donkergrijs van boven en roodbruin op de borst, naar de buik toe lichter. Er bestaan echter geleidelijke overgangen in het verenkleed tussen de in Noord-Afrika voorkomende vale rotszwaluwen en de Kaapse rotszwaluw. Ook het verschil met de ook in Europa voorkomende gewone rotszwaluw is klein.[3].

Verspreiding en leefgebied

Er zijn zes ondersoorten:[4]

Het is oorspronkelijk een vogel van droge berggebieden met steile rotswanden en kloven tot op 3000 m boven de zeespiegel. De soort komt echter ook in steden voor in droge woestijnachtige gebieden. Buiten de broedtijd ook in vochtig terrein zoals bij plassen en moerassen.[3]

Status

De grootte van de wereldpopulatie is niet gekwantificeerd. Men veronderstelt dat de soort in aantal stabiel is. Om deze redenen staat de Kaapse rotszwaluw (samen met de vale rotszwaluw) als niet bedreigd op de Rode Lijst van de IUCN.[1]
