Promotion

On 14 January 2020, KSI exclusively revealed during an interview with Vice that he would be releasing a new song which will "feature a huge name in American rap".[5] On 25 January 2020, KSI posted the song's artwork to his social media pages, revealing the song's title as "Wake Up Call" and the featured artist as Trippie Redd. The song was made available for pre-order on the same day.[6][7]

Shortly after the release of the song, KSI started a TikTok video challenge called "#WakeUpCallChallenge" to promote the song.[8][9][10] Videos using the hashtag have accumulated 140 million views (as of June 2020).[11]

Live performance

On 13 March 2020, KSI performed the song live during BBC One's Sport Relief 2020, which was his first ever televised live music performance.[12][13][14]

Commercial performance

The song entered the UK Singles Chart at number 11, making it KSI's third highest-charting single in the UK to date.[15][4] During this week, it peaked at number 2 on the iTunes UK downloads chart.[16] The song dropped to number 28 and number 38 over the following two weeks, before dropping out of the top 40 and spending a further six weeks in the top 100.[4] The song spent four weeks on the UK R&B Singles Chart, peaking at number 7.[17] The song also charted at number 85 on the Billboard Canadian Hot 100 and number 92 on the ARIA Australian Singles Chart.[18][19] KSI reacted to the commercial success of the song at the time on Twitter, saying that "the support has been amazing" and it "is actually insane".[20][21]

Music video

The music video, directed by Nayip Ramos, was filmed in Hollywood, Los Angeles in January 2020 and was uploaded to KSI's YouTube channel on 31 January 2020.[22][23] It has 13 million views.[24] The music video parodies the film series Austin Powers.[25][26] A behind-the-scenes video of the filming of the music video was uploaded to KSI's YouTube channel on 21 February 2020.[27]

Remix

A remix of the song by producer Yoshi, which replaces KSI's two original verses with a new verse by KSI and two new verses by British grime MC P Money and British YouTuber and fellow Sidemen member Tobi Brown, was released on 6 March 2020, five weeks after the release of the original song.[28] An audio visualiser video for the remix was uploaded to KSI's YouTube channel and it has 3 million views.[29]
