Down Like That

"Down Like That" is a song by British YouTube personality and rapper KSI, featuring American rappers Rick Ross and Lil Baby and British singer and producer S-X, who also produced the track.[1][2][3] It was released on 7 November 2019 and is KSI's first single to be released through RBC Records, under BMG Rights Management, after signing to the record label in November 2019.[4][5] The song is the first single from KSI's debut album Dissimulation, which was released on 22 May 2020.[6] The track was performed live by the featured artists during KSI's ring walk for KSI vs. Logan Paul II[7] ‒ a professional boxing rematch between KSI and American YouTuber Logan Paul on 9 November 2019 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, which KSI won via split decision.[8] The song peaked at number 10 on the UK Singles Chart, making it KSI's second highest-charting single in the UK to date, and it received a Silver certification from the BPI.[9][10]

Background

S-X produced the instrumental and wrote and recorded the chorus in his home studio in Wolverhampton, England. He sent the instrumental and the chorus to KSI, who wrote and recorded several verses for the song. KSI's music manager Mams Taylor suggested having some American rappers feature on the song, resulting in the addition of Rick Ross and Lil Baby's verses.[11][12][13] During interviews, KSI recalls that him and S-X were "going nuts" when they received Rick Ross and Lil Baby's verses.[14]

Promotion

On 7 October 2019, the day of the UK press conference for KSI vs Logan Paul II, KSI exclusively revealed during an interview with Footasylum that he would be releasing a new song called "Down Like That" which will be his ring walk entrance song for the boxing match and will have "some big big features that no one is even going to suspect".[15]

KSI explained the song's lyrics and meaning as part of a Genius Verified video interview, which was released on 12 December 2019.[16]

Commercial performance

The song entered the UK Singles Chart at number 18 and dropped to number 22 the following week.[17][9] The next week, the song climbed to its peak position of number 10, making it KSI's second highest-charting single in the UK to date.[18][9] During this week, it topped the iTunes UK downloads chart.[19] The song dropped to number 17 and number 37 over the following two weeks, before dropping out of the top 40 and spending a further six weeks in the top 100.[9] The song spent a total of ten weeks on the UK R&B Singles Chart, peaking at number 3.[20] The song also charted at number 77 on the Billboard Canadian Hot 100.[21] KSI reacted to the commercial success of the song at the time on Twitter, saying that it "just shows how powerful the youtube community is" and "it's just all about letting the world/mainstream know".[22][23] In February 2020, the British Phonographic Industry certified the song as Silver for selling 200,000 units in the UK.[10]

An audio visualiser video for the song was uploaded to KSI's YouTube channel on 7 November 2019.
