Background

Announced in 2018,[5] Dua Lipa teased "Swan Song" in a clip posted to her Instagram on 3 January 2019.[6][7][8] Originally slated for release on 25 January 2019, Lipa announced that it would be released a day earlier.[9]

Composition

According to Rolling Stone, Lipa "croons over muted electronics, airy synths, stabbing brass samples and vocal chants".[10] It has been described as a "defiant number lined with excitable, percolating percussion".[11] It has been categorized as an electropop song.[12]

Music video

The music video for "Swan Song" was uploaded to Lipa's YouTube account on 24 January 2019.[13] It was directed by Floria Sigismondi.[14][15][16] The video features a futuristic setting similar to the one in a scene of the film Alita: Battle Angel and shows the singer walking on the "smoke-filled streets of Iron City, sporting heavy gold and silver chains over a black leather crop top and pants". Halfway through the video Lipa approaches a mirror that reflects Alita's image back at her as she matches several of Alita's martial arts moves from the film.[17][18] At the end of the video, Lipa's character transforms into Alita.[19][20]

Commercial performance

"Swan Song" peaked at number 24 in Ireland and the United Kingdom.[21][22] It also charted at numbers 27 and 31 in Scotland and Czech Republic respectively.[23][24]
