Background and release

"Break My Heart" was written by Lipa, Alexandra Tamposi, Andrew Wotman, Stefan Johnson and Jordan K. Johnson and was produced by The Monsters & Strangerz and Watt.[1] Lipa had previously worked with all writers excluding Watt, which made her nervous going into the session because she found it is hard to be open and vulnerable with people you don't know.[2] However, she later realized it really easy to do so.[2] While listening back to the song, Lipa and her collaborators noticed a similarity in the chorus melody between the song and "Need You Tonight" by INXS.[3] They didn't want to get sued so Andrew Farriss and Michael Hutchence were credited as writers and INXS were given a publishing credit.[3]

It was first revealed that "Break My Heart" was a song recorded for Future Nostalgia in January 2020, after the song leaked along with "Physical".[4] Lipa confirmed that the song would serve as the third single from the album in March 2020, on the Australian TV show Sunrise.[5] She began teasing the release of the song shortly thereafter.[6] On 20 March 2020, Lipa announced that the song would be released on 27 March 2020, however, Future Nostalgia leaked shortly thereafter and the release of "Break My Heart" was pushed up to 25 March 2020.[7][8] "Break My Heart" premiered on 25 March 2020 at 16:00 PT (23:00 UTC).[9]

Music and lyrics

"Break My Heart" is a disco, dance-pop, and funk song, drawing influence from 1980s music.[10][11][12] It runs for three-minutes and forty-one seconds and interpolates the rhythm guitar melody from "Need You Tonight" by INXS.[13] The song was composed using 4
4
time
in the key of E minor, with a tempo of 112–116 beats per minute.[14] The verses and choruses have a chord progression of Em–G–Fdim–Em–C–Bm–D while the pre-choruses follow a Cmaj7–D6–Bm7–Em7–D6 sequence and the bridge follows a C–D–G/B–Bm–Em–Bm/D–C–D–Em7–B7–B chord progression.[14] "Break My Heart" has a retro-futuristic sound, with a production consisting of a bouncing-ball bass, handclaps, a funk guitar line, disco violins and a Europop and dance beat.[15][16][17][11][18][19]

It opens with a baseline and synths, both categorized as bouncy, and a hi-hat drum.[19][20] In the pre-chorus, the song features a funky baseline and sweeping strings while the music drops out in the middle and abruptly crashes back shortly after for the chorus.[15][21] As the song eases into the chorus, the instruments are stripped back with a swaggering guitar riff underscoring each lyric, while also having a techno-adjacent baseline and a staccato bass rhythm.[21][22][23] The second verse includes a drum kit and the second pre-chorus is driven by a string section.[19] Lipa's vocals span from E3 to B4 and she makes use of spoken-word deliveries.[14][19] Described by Lipa as a "celebration of vulnerability," the song sees her question whether a new love will leave her broken hearted.[2][24] It's lyrics were compared to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic social distancing measures and was inspired by Lipa's partner Anwar Hadid.[25][26]

This samples INXS's 'Need You Tonight,' and it's a perfect explanation of 'dance crying.' It's about finally being in a happy place and knowing this new person is amazing. But then thinking: 'Nothing else compares to this, and what if this ends and it breaks my heart?' It's the whole thing of being scared to be too happy, like when your day is going really well and you think, 'What's the one thing that's going to f*k it up?' I'm a hopeless romantic and always ask myself: 'How am I going to protect this?' But it's also a sweet and vulnerable place to be, because you also see how much you care. It helped that the people I wrote this with know my boyfriend, which helped me be really open.

Promotion

"Break My Heart" was accompanied by a lyric video and Spotify vertical video, released on 9 and 25 April 2020, respectively.[28][29] Due to its COVID-19 pandemic-relating lyrics, a social distancing PSA featuring the song was released on 11 April 2020. It was created by Louis Palacios and urges fans to stay at home and flatten the curve.[30] Several remixes of "Break My Heart" have also been released. The first remix was by Jax Jones, titled "Midnight Snack," and released on 22 May 2020.[31] It reimagines it as a euphoric house song with funk-driven melodies and stomping baselines.[32] Wonderland magazine wrote that one should "host a Zoom party and have [the remix] on repeat for the ultimate club quarantine."[33]

On 29 May 2020, a remix by Joris Voorn was released.[34] It was also categorized as a house song with the addition of pulsating beats.[35] The remix was accompanied by a music video, uploaded to Voorn's YouTube channel the same day. The video sees Voorn performing the remix on a rooftop.[36] Ellie Mullins of We Rave You magazine wrote that Voorn has "outdone" himself with the remix.[35] A Solardo and Moon Boots Remix were released respectively on 12 June 2020.[37][38] The Solardo remix was scheduled to be released a week earlier on 5 June, however was delayed due to unknown reasons.[39] The Moon Boots remix adds percussion, piano stabs and party sounds to the song. Katie Bain of Billboard called it "shimmery", "funky" and wrote that it adds "bounce."[10] Lipa is expected to release a remix of the song featuring fans playing the instruments.[40]

Critical reception

"Break My Heart" received generally positive reviews from critics. Neil Z. Yeung of AllMusic praised the song's sample calling it an "allure" and Brittany Spanos of Rolling Stone called it "bewitching."[41][42] Idolator's Mike Nied wrote that the song adds "depth" to Lipa's discography as well as calling it a "stone-cold bop." He went on to call its beats "deceptively bright" and called the song as a whole "retro-inspired."[43] Courteney Larocca and Callie Ahlgrim, writing for Business Insider Australia, praised the song's production calling it "polished" and "minimalistic."[21] God Is in the TV's Jonathan Wright praised the song's baseline calling it "spectacular" and Thomas Stichbury of Attitude stated that it is "broody."[44][45]

Music video

Background and production

The accompanying music video for "Break My Heart" premiered on YouTube at 06:30 PT (13:30 UTC) on 26 March 2020.[58] It was directed by Henry Scholfield who also directed Lipa's videos for "Lost in Your Light", "New Rules" and "IDGAF".[59] The video was shot in Sofia, Bulgaria in January 2020 over the course of five days.[60][61][62] It features 1990s-inspired slide clips.[63] While filming the video, Lipa had a case of the flu.[62] To create the video, VFX, wire work and a tilting set were used.[64] The sets for the video were built across three stages and were designed by Mark Connell.[64]

I wanted to create something that felt like that tumble dryer of emotions when falling for someone who's pulling away from you. Dua's perfomance [sic] was brilliant (as always!) taking us on her journey from vulnerable to empowered, via her playful cheeky-charming self.

Director Henry Scholfield discussing the inspiration behind the video.[64]

Synopsis

Lipa blowing a bubble with gum, while sitting on a car in a traffic-jammed city block.

The video begins with Lipa jumping on cars and walking through a traffic-jammed city block.[65] She wears a red jacket and black pants.[66] As she is walking, one of the cars turns into a toy car being played with by a child outside of a man's apartment.[67] Lipa is seen wearing a purple cardigan, black tights, white shoes and a white skirt.[66] She walks into the man's apartment where she struggles to maintain her balance.[68] This is a metaphor for being uncertain about whether her feelings are being reciprocated.[68] The apartment then turns into a model boat on display in a restaurant.[67] In the restaurant, Lipa observes various couples going through issues.[59] She starts to dance on a disco floor in the middle of the restaurant before a wall explodes and she is sucked out.[65][68]

She lands on an airplane seat where she gets up and walks to the back before it breaks in two.[59] The carpet used on the plane is that of The Shining (1980) and Lipa wears a pink wool jacket and skirt with black lining, over a black shirt.[65][66] She then begins to dance on the end of the plane before a life raft explodes on her and she wakes up in a bed with a confused partner.[59] She is seen wearing a pink Bambi wool sweater with white pants.[66] Lipa runs scared into the bathroom picking up her shoes and beds with other men begin cycling through in the background.[59] She then falls into the bathtub which turns into a frothy pink martini one of Lipa's backup dancers is holding while she dances on a bar couch.[68] Lipa wears a Mirror Palais cropped red shirt and a red and white checked tweed mini skirt.[69][66] The video concludes looking at all the previous scenes and undoing some of the transitions before Lipa blows a bubble sitting on a car from the first scene.[70]

Reception

Shannon Miller of The A.V. Club called it a "colorful music video punctuated with mind-bending effects and LED-lit sets".[11] Writing for PopMatters, Ian Rushbury called it a "multi-million-dollar remake" of the video for "Common People" by Pulp writing that the video has "snazzy visuals and couture outfits".[50] In Soundigest, Kenly Campos wrote that the video is "extremely well-made" with its "colorful outfits and bubbly choreography".[26] Callie Ahlgrim of Insider described the video as "Lipa serving a variety of retro looks, dancing her cares away, and cycling through suitors in a surreal dreamscape".[71] NME's Tom Skinner described the video as "eye-popping" and "location-hopping".[12] Writing for Idolator, Mike Wass called the sets "candy-colored," the choreography "laissez-faire" and wrote "Dua treats us to look after look, sullen glances."[72] The music video has received over 130 million views on YouTube.[70]

Animated video

Lipa collecting a jeweled heart in the animated music video

"Break My Heart" was also accompanied by an animated video, which is a fullscreen of the song's vertical video. It was directed by Marco Pavone and premiered on YouTube on 8 May 2020.[73] The video takes place in the Andromeda Galaxy on the fictional planet of BMH1.[74] It opens with an animated Lipa flying into BMH1, a colourless and desolate planet.[75] She wears a pink space suit, reminiscent of Totally Spies!.[74] Lipa eventually lands at a cave where pulls out a hologram map directing her to go into the cave, in search of a jeweled heart.

She goes into the cave and finds the heart floating in a light at the end of a rock bridge. When she tries to pick up the heart, she begins to levitate and the heart implants it's self into her space suit.[76] She leaves the cave and begins to charge her jetpack, however, a giant robot appears and begins to attack her. Unable to fly, Lipa runs scared before falling to the ground.[75] The robot attempts to break the heart that Lipa recovered, however, Lipa soon regains access to her jetpack and flys away with the heart. Throughout the video, clips of Lipa falling from the sky into a city, wearing a pink outfit, are also shown.[74] The video has received over 3 million views on YouTube.[73]

She first performed the song in a virtual performance for Amazon Music UK on 30 March 2020.[77] Lipa also gave a virtual performance of the song for The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on 8 April 2020.[78] The performance featured Lipa sitting in front of a blank wall before the background started changing to city time-lapses and eventually to the Tonight Show set.[79] Mike Nied of Idolator praised the performance, writing that Lipa "slayed" as well as calling her vocals "smokey" and praising her personality.[80] She did an acoustic virtual performance of the song on 17 April 2020 on ZDF.[81] On 22 April 2020, she virtually performed the song on Big Brother Brasil 20.[82] Lipa performed the song on 16 May 2020, on Graduate Together's virtual ceremony on ABC.[83]
