Composition

"IDGAF" runs for three minutes and 38 seconds.[2] It features an electric guitar riff with heavy snare drums. According to the sheet music published at Musicnotes.com by Sony/ATV Music Publishing, "IDGAF" is written in the key of E minor. Lipa's vocals range between the notes D3 and D5.[3] Natalie Maher of Billboard says that "she powerfully reminds her ex that she is most certainly not thinking about him".[4]

Music video

The music video for "IDGAF" was directed by Henry Scholfield, with artistic direction by Scholfield and Mosaert (Stromae and Luc Junior Tam).[5] The video premiered on 12 January 2018. It took 22 hours to shoot. According to Scholfield, the idea behind the video was to "embody the sense of empowerment in the track, whilst going beyond the literal breakup context". Lipa stated that the video is about "your stronger and weaker side fighting with each other only to realize that self-love is what will help you overcome any negativity that comes your way."[6]

Synopsis

The video shows Dua Lipa fighting an internal battle with herself.[7] The two versions of Lipa represent "the vulnerable romantic" and "the empowered independent spirit" stages that follow a break-up.[8] Both are dressed in matching purple and orange suits, backed by their respective female crew.[9] Throughout the video, the two versions are seen fighting a battle with one another but become more cohesive as one person as the video progresses.[10]

Live performances

Lipa performed the song at the BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge in 2018 in Los Angeles, along with Charli XCX, Zara Larsson, Alma, and .[11][12] She has also performed the song at the Glastonbury Festival in 2017,[13] The Ellen DeGeneres Show in March 2018 and NRJ Music Awards in November 2018.[14]

Critical reception

In a review of Dua Lipa, Alex Green of Clash magazine wrote that "IDGAF" "takes crisp, almost militaristic drums and combines them with some of Lipa's most cutting lyrics." Green also stated that the song "is likely the best track off the album."[15]
