South Holland, Lincolnshire

There were 76,512 citizens in the district at the 2001 census.[1] The median age is nearly 43.[1] 82.6% of people in the district claim to be of a Christian religion - the highest proportion for any district in the East Midlands (St Helens has the highest proportion of Christians in the UK at 86.9%). The district has the lowest unemployment in Lincolnshire and average hours worked per week are the second highest for UK districts (Eden, Cumbria has the highest).

The 2011 census reports 88,270 people at 1.2 per hectare in 37,264 households.[2]

Much of the district is low-lying and is kept free from inundation by land drainage. This is the responsibility of the South Holland Internal Drainage Board and the Environment Agency.[3]

On Thursday 23 June 2016 South Holland voted in only the third major UK-wide referendum on the issue of the United Kingdom's membership of the European Union in the 2016 EU Referendum under the provisions of the European Union Referendum Act 2015 where voters were asked to decide on the question “Should the United Kingdom remain a member of the European Union or leave the European Union” by voting for either “Remain a member of the European Union” or “Leave the European Union”. South Holland produced the second biggest majority vote to "Leave the European Union" in the United Kingdom and was beaten only by neighbouring Boston with voters choosing to leave by 73.5 per cent of the popular vote on a high turnout of 75%. The campaign to leave was partly led by local Conservative MP John Hayes who also campaigned nationally for a "Leave" vote.

The result was declared at Springfields Exhibition Centre in Spalding early on Friday 24 June 2016 by the "Counting officer" (CO) Anna Graves.
