Jisoo (singer, born 1995)

Kim Ji-soo (Korean: 김지수; born January 3, 1995), better known mononymously as Jisoo, is a South Korean singer and actress. She made her debut as a vocalist in August 2016 as a member of the girl group Blackpink under YG Entertainment.

Biography

Early life

Kim Ji-soo was born on January 3, 1995,[2][3] in Gunpo, Gyeonggi, South Korea.[4][5] She attended high school at the School of Performing Arts Seoul.[2] In 2011, Kim joined YG Entertainment through auditions as a trainee.[6] In 2015, Kim made a cameo appearance in the KBS2 drama The Producers alongside label-mates 2NE1's Sandara Park and Winner's Kang Seung-yoon.[7] In the same year Kim featured in several advertisements including Samsonite alongside actor Lee Min-ho, Smart Uniform, LG Electronics, and Nikon.[8][9][10][11]

In addition to her native Korean, she is also able to speak Japanese and Chinese.[2][12]

2016–present: Blackpink

Kim debuted as a member of Blackpink on August 8, 2016. She is the oldest member of the group.[12] The group has released two Korean extended plays, Square Up and Kill This Love, along with a Japanese studio album, Blackpink in Your Area, and extended play Blackpink. On February 5, 2017 until February 4, 2018, Kim joined Inkigayo as an MC alongside Got7's Jin-young and NCT's Do-young.[13] On June 3, 2019, Kim was confirmed to make a short appearance in tvN fantasy drama Arthdal Chronicles along with 2PM's Nichkhun.[14] For her solo stage in a 2019 Blackpink concert, Jisoo performed a cover of "Clarity" by Zedd[15] with Korean lyrics she wrote herself.

In September 2018, Kim and band-mate Rosé became endorsement models for South Korean cosmetics brand Kiss Me.[16] In December 2019, Kim became a local ambassador for Dior's cosmetics brand "Dior Beauty".[17]

Impact and influence

In Gallup Korea's annual music poll for 2018, Kim was ranked the tenth most popular idol in South Korea, receiving 4.8% of the votes.[18][19] In April 2019, she was ranked the tenth most followed K-pop idol on Instagram, with 12.8 million followers.[20] In 2019, Jisoo was also ranked as the sixth most popular female K-pop idol in a survey of soldiers doing mandatory military service in South Korea.[21] In 2019 she was chosen as a part of the BoF 500, which is a "definitive professional index" of people shaping the $2.4 trillion fashion industry.[2]
