Diplomatic relations

Spain does not have an Embassy in Mbabane, bilateral relations are carried out from the Spanish Embassy in Maputo, whose holder is also before Swaziland in multiple accreditation regime. Official and commercial exchanges between Spain and Swaziland are very scarce. Currently the Spanish colony resident in Swaziland is reduced to 8 people; The passer-by consists essentially of sporadic groups of tourists that include that country in their itinerary through South Africa. Visa applications for residents of Swaziland to travel to the Schengen area are managed by the Spanish Embassy in Maputo. In general, these are trips to Spain for tourism, studies or business reasons.[3]

The Spanish Embassy in Maputo maintains a frequency of visits to Swaziland in order to follow the evolution of the country in the most diverse fields. To that end, the Embassy maintains a working relationship considered as fruitful with the Delegation of the European Union in Mbabane. Relations between the EU and Swaziland are very relevant. In addition to the cooperation programs, a periodic Political Dialogue is maintained with the Swazi government.[3]

Economic relations

Exports in the last 10 years have not reached 0.001% of total Spanish exports. As for purchases, they have not exceeded 0.002% of the total world trade in Spain. From the point of view of origin, in the last 10 years Spain has not exceeded 0.2% market share in Swaziland. In that period the trade balance has always been (except in 2005) unfavorable for Spain.[4]

Spain is forced to make an effort so that Spanish companies that are increasingly showing interest in Sub-Saharan Africa as an investment destination can take advantage of the geographical proximity of South Africa and Mozambique to explore investment possibilities in Swaziland.[4]
