As much as the difficult relationship between Spain and Morocco, however, Spain and Algeria enjoy a larger and friendlier level of relationship due to sharing historical commons, historical conflicts with Morocco and as being two Mediterranean countries.[1]

History

Spain and Algeria were once controlled by several pre-medieval empires like the Roman Empire or the Arab Caliphates.

In early 16th century, the Spanish Empire and the Ottoman Empire engaged to exert control over Algeria. Spain captured in 1510 the rock of Algiers and held it for brief spell before being expelled by Hayreddin Barbarossa in 1529.

The Spanish Monarchy exerted control of Oran (1509–1708; 1732–1792) and the neighbouring port of Mers El Kébir for much of the early modern period.

Modern relations

Following the death of Francisco Franco and transformation of Spain from a military dictatorship to a constitutional monarchy, Spain and Algeria have reapproached relations. Both two countries support the cause of Western Sahara, such as self-determination of Sahrawi people.

Both countries have started to reinforce relations since 2013.[2] Algeria and Spain positioned themselves as important partners in 2015,[3] and linked to have enjoyed a stronger relations as for 2017.[4]

Disputes with Morocco

One of the main key reason for the strong tie between Algeria and Spain is about Moroccan irredentism, which Morocco sought to create a greater Morocco that aimed to Spanish Andalusia and Western Algeria as parts of Moroccan territory. As such, Spain and Algeria seek a close tie together in counter to Morocco, notably Western Sahara issue and disputes between Morocco and Spain.
