Bangladesh University of Textiles

Bangladesh University of Textiles, commonly referred to as BUTEX (Bengali: বুটেক্স), is a Public Textile Engineering university in Bangladesh that emphasises on technological education in textiles while entrepreneurial industrialisation stays as its core subject of interest.[2][3]

It has seven constituent college affiliated with it, all of which are textiles based institutes of technology.[4] The colleges are centrally regulated by the university in a totalitarian manner, while the fundings are provided by the BD Department of Textiles under compliance with an MoU signed by the BD Ministry of Education.[5]

The university itself offers academic and professional degrees in various fields of textiles technology, fashion designing, advanced business and marketing strategies and in several more disciplines on both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. As of November 2018, it offers graduate programs in 10 different specialised areas under its five faculties.

History

The institution was established as a fully functional university on 22 December 2010 by an ordinance of the Ministry of Education, Government of Bangladesh.

British Weaving School

During the British colonial rule, in 1921, a weaving school was established at Narinda in the city of Dhaka to provide specialised technical education in the field of Textiles by offering artisan-level courses. It was named as British Weaving School and later East Bengal Textile Institute which was upgraded to offer diploma courses in Textile Technology. In 1950, it was once again renamed as East Pakistan Textile Institute. The institute was transferred to its present campus at Tejgaon Industrial Area in Dhaka in 1960.

College of Textile Engineering and Technology

In the year of 1978, the institute launched a four-year period bachelor's degree program in Textile Technology by affiliation with the University of Dhaka and was upgraded into a college renaming it as College of Textile Engineering & Technology. Initially, intake was only 60 per year and since the introduction of bachelor's degree course, more than 2,800 textile engineers and technologists had graduated from this institution.

The erstwhile College of Textile Engineering & Technology had been an economically important institute under the administrative control of the Ministry of Education through Directorate of Technical Education which offered BSc in Textile Technology/BSc in Textile Engineering/BSc in Textile Management courses as a constituent college of the University of Dhaka.

Birth of BUTEX

The Bangladesh textile industry is the most important industrial sector as more than 83% of export earnings comes from this sector. Equipping the textile industry with qualified manpower with updated technical knowledge, expertise and skill is essential in building the appropriate backward linkages at the shortest possible time to face the challenges of quota-free post-MFA period.

Considering the importance of textile education and research, the government of Bangladesh took initiatives to upgrade the College of Textile Engineering & Technology to a university. For this purpose, "Bangladesh Textile University Act, 2010" (Act no. 49, 2010) was passed by the Bangladesh National Assembly and the Honorable President gave consent to the act on 5 October 2010. The Act was made effective from 22 December 2010 as per SRO No. 395-law/2010 date 20 December 2010 of the Ministry of Education. The Honorable Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina officially inaugurated BUTEX on 15 March 2011.[6]

Halls of residence

There are four residence halls to provide housing for BUTEX students. Administrative head of a residence hall is its respective provost. The Sheikh Hasina Hall is for female students, and the remaining two halls are for male students studying in the undergraduate level. The halls are named after historical eminent figures of Bangladesh (except the "Sheikh Hasina Hall"). They are listed below:

Sports facilities

BUTEX has a playground at the middle of the campus. It is used as venue of annual athletics competition of the university as well as Inter departmental cricket, football competitions.
