WAXO (1220 AM/95.9 FM) was a radio station formerly broadcasting a country music and classic rock format. Licensed to Lewisburg, Tennessee, United States, the station, prior to its bankruptcy, was owned and operated by Marshall County Radio Corporation and featured programming from Westwood One.[1] It also operated a low-power television station on digital channel 29 (formerly seen on analog channel 34).
WAXO went on the air September 1, 1980.[2] The WAXO call letters were previously used by the present-day WWDV in Zion, Illinois, when it was located in Kenosha, Wisconsin.
WAXO radio and television carried a wide selection of local sports including Marshall County sports, Forrest High School sports, and Cornersville High School sports. The station is also an affiliate of the Tennessee Titans radio network.[3]
In March, 2016 WAXO (AM), FM translator W240CC and WAXO (TV) went off the air due to owners, Marshall County Radio Corporation, filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, as there were no funds to continue operations of the stations. Special temporary authority had been granted by the Federal Communications Commission to keep WAXO (AM) silent for up to one year.[4] After having been off the air for more than one year, WAXO (AM)'s license expired on March 25, 2017.[5][6] The license of the 95.9 MHz translator W240CC was cancelled on June 7, 2017 for the same reason.[7] It was unknown if the television stations would either be put up for sale, or if broadcast operations would be totally liquidated, However on June 26, 2017, after being off the air & inactive for a long period of time, the license was cancelled by the FCC & the legal callsign of W29DM-D was deleted from the FCC's database.
WAXO television
The television side held the legal call letters of W29DM-D (but was identified on air as WAXO-TV), and was an independent station. The station also served as an affiliate & broadcast programming from America One in the mid-morning hours (until that network was discontinued in September 2014 and merged with Youtoo TV), and as a Gospel Broadcasting Network (GBN) affiliate until 2015. Local programming and replays of the local high school sports are also seen on the station; at other times, the station aired a slideshow of local events with audio from sister radio station WAXO playing in the background. The station was seen over the air (via a digital low-power translator) on channel 29.[8] The Station was also streamed online via WAXO's website, until it was removed sometime in 2013. The television station was taken off the air along with the radio stations in March, 2016 due to the owners, Marshall County Radio Corporation, filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, as noted above.
