Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation Limited (TNSTC) (Tamil:தமிழ்நாடு அரசு போக்குவரத்து கழகம்) is a public transport bus operator in Tamil Nadu, India.[2] It operates Town and Mofussil buses with a combined fleet strength of 22203[3] buses as of 2016-17[4] along with its subsidiaries MTC and SETC.

About

TNSTC is fully owned and operated by the Government of Tamil Nadu. TNSTC started online booking facilities TNSTC Online Booking to book bus tickets between major cities served by TNSTC and SETC. It caters to all the districts within Tamil Nadu and also operates services to neighboring states of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala and union territory of Puduchery. Until 1997, transport corporation was bifurcated into 21 divisions which was later merged to form 8 divisions. TNSTC owns 321 depots and five workshops. TNSTC also offers contract and tourist services. Every bus owned by the corporation displays a portrait of Tamil poet Thiruvalluvar along with a two line verse from Thirukkural inside the bus. TNSTC is the largest government bus transport corporation in India.

Structure

For managing convenience, TNSTC is divided into 6 divisions. Each division is separated into regions and each region consists of a set of branches. In every bus, the division name is displayed in windshield and side body along with its code. Region and branch name is displayed both front and back below the wind shield either fully or partially.

TNSTC COIMBATORE

TNSTC – Coimbatore is the public transport bus operator mainly in the districts of Coimbatore, Erode, Tirupur and Nigiri. TNSTC – CBE was formed with merger of erstwhile Cheran transport corporation, Jeeva Transport Corporation and Bharathiyar Transport Corporation.

History:

Cheran Transport Corporation(CTC) was incorporated on 17.02.1972 after obtaining buses from Anamalais Bus Transport(ABT-Coimbatore). It also received buses from other 19 operators from Coimbatore, Nilgiris and Erode districts. Later CTC was split. CTC was looking after Coimbatore (United) and Niligiris districts. Later Cheran was split and Mahakavi Bharathiyar transport corporation for formed having Udhagai(Ooty) as headquarters.

Presently TNSTC-CBE operates city buses in Coimbatore, Erode and Tirupur in Tamil Nadu. Coimbatore region has its bodybuilding unit at Pollachi. This bodybuilding unit was earlier known as Cheran Engineering Corporation, which was formed by taking buses from ABT. CEC has main unit at Good Shed Rd, Pollachi. FC for the buses are done at Pollachi and Udumalpet units.

Tamil Nadu Fire service trucks are built at Udumalpet and Pollachi bodybuilding units.

TNSTC KUMBAKONAM

TNSTC – Kumbakonam is the public transport bus operator mainly in the districts of Karur, Trichy, Perambalur, Ariyalur, Thanjavur, Thiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Pudukottai, Sivagangai Ramanathapuram and Karaikal (PY). TNSTC – Kumbakonam was formed by the merger of erstwhile  CRC Cholan Roadways Corporation, DCTC Dheeran Chinamalai Transport Corporation, VATC Veeran Azhagumuthukon Transport Corporation and MPTC  MarudhuPandian Transport Corporation.

History:

In 1997 when the Tamil Nadu government decided to change the name of every corporation to TNSTC. CRC became TNSTC – Kumbakonam Region I, DCTC to TNSTC – Kumbakonam Region  II, VATC to TNSTC – Kumbakonam Region  III and MPTC to TNSTC – Kumbakonam Region IV.

on June 20, 2013, a new regional office at Nagapattinam opened for better operations on Nagapattinam, Thiruvarur District and Karur for Karur District.

TNSTC – MADURAI

TNSTC – Madurai is the public transport bus operator mainly in the districts of  Madurai, Dindigul, Theni, Virudhunagar.

History:

The Pandiyan Roadways Corporation Ltd. (presently Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (Madurai) Ltd, Madurai Region), came into existence from 17.01.1972 on account of nationalization of buses of the private operators as per the 1971 Act. The fleet of 346 buses along with the Depots and workmen were taken from M/s Southern Roadways Private Ltd, Madurai.

This corporation was formed under Companies Act to secure effective decentralization and better management. On 01.01.1974, 106 buses operated in Thirunelveli area was transferred and Kattabomman Transport Corporation (presently TNSTC (Madurai) Ltd, Thirunelveli Region) came in to existence with Nagarcoil as its headquarters. 62 more buses were transferred to M/s Cholan Roadways Corporation Ltd. (presently TNSTC (Kumbakonam) Ltd, Kumbakonam Region) which came in to existence with Kumbakonam as its headquarters with effect from 01.07.74. After these transfers, the area of this corporation covered 3 revenue districts of unbifurcated Madurai, Ramanathapuram and Pudukottai districts.

When the fleet strength of this Corporation was 1249, this was bifurcated on 01.04.1983 and 352 buses were handed over to M/s Maruthu Pandiyar Transport Corporation Ltd, (presently TNSTC (Kumbakonam) Ltd, Karaikudi Region), which started its operation in the eastern portion of Madurai-Aruppukottai Road in the unbifurcated Ramanathapuram District and Pudukotai District.

When the fleet was 1097 buses, this corporation was bifurcated and 446 buses were handed over to M/s Rani Mangammal Transport Corporation Ltd. (presently TNSTC (Madurai) Ltd, Dindugal Region) on 01.04.1986 which started its operation with Dindugal as headquarters with the area of operation covering the part of Madurai District and west of the Dindugal-Periyakulam-Kumuli Road and entire Dindigal District.

To streamline operations, the government ordered the transfer of Aruppukottai branch, which was taken over on 01.04.91 along with the buses from M/s Maruthu Pandiyar Transport Corporation Ltd. (presently TNSTC (Kumbakonam) Ltd, Karaikudi Region) and with this transfer, the entire Virudhunagar District came in to the operational jurisdiction of this Corporation.

When the fleet was 1249, the Corporation was bifurcated as per G.O MS No.100 dated 29.04.1997 and the new Corporation commenced operations in the name of M/s Veeran Sundaralingam Transport Corporation Ltd. (presently TNSTC (Madurai) Ltd, Virudhunagar Region), having its headquarters at Virudhunagar with 352 buses on 01.05.97.

Subsequently, the name of Pandiyan Roadways Corporation Ltd. was changed to Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (Madurai Div I) LTD. TNSTC-Madurai had 5 regions namely Madurai, Dindigul, Virudhunagar, Tirunelveli and Nagercoil. TNSTC-Madurai was further bifurcated on 23-October-2010 to form TNSTC-Tirunelveli with Tirunelveli and Nagercoil regions.

TNSTC – Salem is the public transport bus operator mainly in the districts of  Namakkal, Salem, Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri. TNSTC – Salem was formed with merger of erstwhile  ASTC Annai Sathya Transport Corporation, ATC Anna Transport Corporation.

History:

In 1997 when the Tamil Nadu government decided to change the name of every corporation to TNSTC. ATC  became TNSTC – Salem Region I, ASTC to TNSTC – Salem  Region  II.

TNSTC – TIRUNELVELI

TNSTC – Tirunelveli is the public transport bus operator mainly in the districts of  Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi and Kanyakumari. TNSTC – Tirunelveli was formed with merger of erstwhile  KTC Kattabomman Transport Corporation and NTC  Nesamony Transport Corporation.

History:

Kattabomman Transport corporation (KTC) currently TNSTC Tirunelveli was incorporated on 01.01.1974 after assuming 106 buses operated in this districts from Pandian Roadways Corporation (PRC). It came in to existence with Nagarcoil as its headquarters. In 1983, buses serving in Kanyakumari district were acquired and formed Nesamony Transport Corporation (NTC). After the formation of NTC, KTC headquarters was transferred from Nagercoil to Tirunelveli.

In 1997 when Tamil Nadu government decided to change the name of every corporation to TNSTC. KTC became TNSTC – Madurai Region  II and NTC to TNSTC – Madurai Region  III and new coding for buses started for KTC it started with R and next letter A, B denoted each depot, and for NTC it is same with S. These codes were later abandoned.

To bring efficient administration and services, TNSTC Tirunelveli was formed with HQ at Tirunelveli on October 23, 2010, taking buses from the operational area of  Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi and Kanyakumari. It also took Sencottah Depot from Virudhunagar Region with regional offices at Tirunelveli and Nagercoil. On June 20, 2013, a new regional office at Thoothukudi opened for better operations.

Operations:

Presently TNSTC – Tirunelveli operates city buses in Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi and Nagercoil of Tamil Nadu. It also operates long-distance services from Kaliyakavilai, Mathandam, Kanyakumari, Nagercoil, Sencottah, Tenkasi, Tirunelveli, Thiruchendur, Thoothukudi to Tiruppur, Coimbatore, Salem, Trichy, Velankanni areas.

It operates a long-run Mofussil 3×2 seater from Kuzhithurai 1 Depot on Kaliykavilai – Velankanni 519 km within Tamil Nadu.

TNSTC – Villupuram is the public transport bus operator mainly in the districts of  Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Vellore, Thiruvanamalai, Villupuram, Cuddalore and Pondy (PY). TNSTC – Villupuram was formed via the merger of TPTC Thanthai Periyar Transport Corporation, PATC Pattukottai Alagiri Transport Corporation and MGRTC Dr. MGR Transport Corporation.

History:

In 1997 when Tamil Nadu government decided to change the name of every corporation to TNSTC. TPTC  became TNSTC – Villupuram Region I, PATC to TNSTC – Villupuram  Region  II, MGRTC to TNSTC – Villupuram  Region  III.

A new regional office at Thiruvallur opened for better operations on  Thiruvallur District and in Cuddalore for Cuddalore District.

MTC

Metropolitan Transport Corporation (Chennai – Division.I) Ltd was established on 1 January 1972 with 1,029 buses. The operational jurisdication is the Chennai Metropolitan area. It served 176 routes and had 8 depots, including those at T. Nagar, Adyar, and Vadapalani. Depots at Anna Nagar and K. K. Nagar were established in 1973. The Pallavan Transport Corporation was split into two and a new Corporation, namely, Dr. Ambedkar Transport Corporation Ltd. started functioning on 19 January 1994. For the split, Poonamallee Depot was split. Buses covering Broadway via Koyambedu, Ambathur and Redhills are operated by Dr. Ambedkar Transport Corporation Ltd and south-bound buses Broadway via Guindy, Tambaram and T. Nagar are operated by Pallavan Transport Corporation. Pallavan Transport Corporation was renamed Metropolitan Transport Corporation (Madras Division –1) Limited, Dr. Ambedkar Transport Corporation was renamed as Metropolitan Transport Corporation (Madras Division-II) Ltd., on 1 July 1997.

In order to make the Corporations viable, and for better administrative control, Metropolitan Transport Corporation (Madras Division II) was amalgamated with Metropolitan Transport Corporation (Madras Division I) Ltd in 10 January 2001. The fleet as of 1 March 2009 was 3,260 with 25 depots, a bodybuilding unit at Chrompet, a ticket printing press at K.K. Nagar and Reconditioning Unit at Patullos Road.

SETC

State Express Transport Corporation (Tamil Nadu) (formerly known as Thiruvalluvar Transport Corporation) is a state-owned transport corporation that runs long-distance Mofussil services exceeding 300 km and above throughout the state of Tamil Nadu and major cities in adjoining states of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala and the union territory of Puduchery.

History

A separate entity exclusively for operating long-distance express services was conceived by the Government of Tamil Nadu in 1975 and the services were transferred to the newly formed express wing of Pallavan Transport Corporation, effective from 15 September 1975. It was registered formally on 14 January 1980 and renamed Thiruvalluvar Transport Corporation (TTC) in honor of Tamil poet Thiruvalluvar. During 1990s, JJTC was formed and operated the interstate routes of the erstwhile TTC. JJTC was then renamed as RGTC in 1996. Both TTC and RGTC were later merged into State Express Transport Corporation (SETC) in 1997.

TNSTC and SETC use custom-made buses built on Ashok Leyland and TATA-supplied chassis. Air conditioned buses for intra city routes in Chennai are supplied by Volvo. All divisions have their own coach-building units.

Other ventures

In 1984, Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation Limited established Institute of Road and Transport Technology at Chithode, Erode and IRT Perundurai Medical College at Perundurai near Erode. In 2013, Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation Limited established Amma Kudineer (Amma Packaged drinking water) which produces and packages mineral water in 1l plastic bottles, and sells them in long-distance, state-owned buses and in bus stations. The price has been fixed at ₹10 per bottle, and the production plant is in Gummidipoondi in Thiruvallur district.
