Super Cassettes Industries Private Limited, doing business as T-Series,[note 1][2][1] is an Indian music record label and film production company founded by Gulshan Kumar in 1983.[4]
As of 2018, T-Series is one of the largest Indian music record labels of Bollywood and emerging as a powerful film production company working with stars like Salman Khan, Ajay Devgn, Akshay Kumar, Aamir Khan and Ranbir Kapoor.[5]
Their breakthrough album was Aashiqui (1990), composed by Nadeem–Shravan (Nadeem Akhtar Saifi and Shravan Kumar Rathod), which sold 20 million copies in India and became the best-selling Indian soundtrack album of all time.[6] However, Gulshan Kumar was murdered by the Indian mafia syndicate D-Company in 1997. Since then, T-Series has been led by his son Bhushan Kumar and younger brother Krishan Kumar.
The T-Series YouTube channel, which primarily shows music videos as well as film trailers, is the most-viewed YouTube channel, with over 50 billion views as of 7 October 2018, becoming the first ever channel to do so. It is also the second most-subscribed channel on the site, having over 65.6 million subscribers as of 14 October 2018.[7] In addition, T-Series has a multi-channel network including 27 online properties, which have accumulated a total of 65 million subscribers and 50 billion views as of August 2018.[8]
History
T-Series was founded by Gulshan Kumar in 1983, as a small company initially selling pirated Bollywood songs.[9] T-Series' first original film soundtrack release was for Lallu Ram in 1984, with music scored by Ravindra Jain.[10] The company's breakthrough came with Aashiqui (1990),[9] a film soundtrack album composed by duo Nadeem–Shravan (Nadeem Akhtar Saifi and Shravan Kumar Rathod), which sold 20 million units in India,[11] and is the best-selling Bollywood soundtrack album of all time.[6] Many of the other best-selling Bollywood music albums of the 1990s, particularly those composed by Nadeem–Shravan, were released under the T-Series label.[6] Besides music production, the company also began venturing into film production.[12]
In 1997, T-Series founder Gulshan Kumar was murdered by the Indian mafia Mumbai underworld syndicate D-Company.[13] His assassination also led to T-Series losing its most prolific musicians at the time, Nadeem–Shravan, due to Nadeem Akhtar Saifi initially being accused of involvement in the murder, before later being exonerated.[14][15][16] After Gulshan Kumar's death in 1997, the company has since been led by his son Bhushan Kumar[17] and younger brother Krishan Kumar.
YouTube
T-Series joined YouTube on 13 March 2006, but had only started uploading videos in late 2010. The T-Series channel, which primarily shows music videos as well as film trailers, is the world's most-viewed YouTube channel,[18][19] after surpassing PewDiePie in February 2017.[20] T-Series currently has over 48 billion views as of 9 September 2018.[7]
The label's music channel also has over 65 million subscribers, making it the second most-subscribed YouTube channel (after PewDiePie), the second channel ever to hit 61 million subscribers, and the most subscribed Asian and non-English-language YouTube channel.[7] They are also the second channel to reach 50 million subscribers, which would qualify them for a Ruby Play Button, though it hasn't been received or revealed. It had been unveiled through many channelytics that on average the channel earns nearly 150,000 subscribers everyday. SocialBlade predicts that their daily average views is over 80 million and with the current growth of their channel they would surpass PewDiePie's subscriber count by late October 2018.[21][22]
Alongside the main T-Series channel, the company also owns a multi-channel network including 26 other online properties, which include YouTube channels such as T-Series Tamil, T-Series Telugu,[8] and Bollywood Classics.[23] Six of their channels are among the top 100 most-subscribed channels in India, including T-Series, Bhakti Sagar, Apna Punjab, T-Series Regional, Lahari Music, and T-Series Telugu.[24] Combined, T-Series' 27 online properties have accumulated a total of 93 million subscribers and 61.5 billion views as of August 2018. During January–July 2018, T-Series earned an income of ₹7.2 billion (US$100 million) from YouTube.[8]
The pace at which T-Series is growing in terms of viewership and subscriptions has been attributed to the fast growth of India's online population. By Summer 2018, India's online population grew to 500 million internet users, which represents just over a third of the country's overall population and is continuing to grow at a fast pace.[25] India has the world's second-largest online population (behind only China, where YouTube is blocked), with YouTube alone having over 225 million monthly Indian users. India's high demand for YouTube content, but lack of local content creators, has contributed significantly to the rapid growth of T-Series.[26]
