Suburra: Blood on Rome (Italian: Suburra – La serie) is an Italian crime drama web television series set in Rome and a prequel to the 2015 film Suburra, in turn inspired by the novel of the same name by Giancarlo De Cataldo and Carlo Bonini. The series was developed by Daniele Cesarano and Barbara Petronio for Netflix, making it the first Italian-language original television series produced by the company.[1] It is produced by Cattleya in association with Rai Fiction and Bartleby Film.

The world premiere of the series was on September 1, 2017 at the 74th Venice Film Festival, where the first two episodes were screened as part of the Il Cinema nel Giardino section.[2][3] All episodes of the first season premiered worldwide on October 6, 2017.[4] The series is also set to air on the Italian television network Rai 2 in 2018.[4]

On January 30, 2018, the series was renewed for a second season,[5] whose production began on April 3, 2018.[6]

Plot

Inspired by real life events, Suburra is focused on power clashes and corruption in Rome and the Vatican City, among organized crime, politicians and churchmen.

October 2008. The Mayor of Rome has resigned and crime boss Samurai has 21 days to force the Municipal Building Commission, led by Amedeo Cinaglia, to deem a beachfront land in Ostia buildable. Interested in building a port with criminal business partners from the south of Italy, he must also persuade the Vatican and the Adami family to sell the property to him. Financial audit Sara Monaschi tries to convince Monsignor Theodosiou, the head of the Vatican commission in charge of selling, to offer the property to her husband, in exchange for a sex party organized by Lele Marchilli, a young drug dealer who has just been asked to bring €20,000 to Samurai for having passed off in his territory. Aureliano Adami kills Sinti mobster Boris, annoyed at his father's decision to sell his land to Samurai and at the kingpin's request for peace between the Adamis and the Sinti Anacleti family. Spadino Anacleti, a closeted homosexual, is forced by his family to meet Angelica, his betrothed. Lele asks Aureliano to bring cocaine to Theodosiou's sex party, but he ends up calling Spadino as well, as Aureliano is disposing of Boris's corpse. The three young men eventually meet at the party, where they find Theodosiou and decide to blackmail him with a sex tape recorded that night.

The second season was written by Barbara Petronio, Ezio Abbate and Fabrizio Bettelli. This season's directors are Andrea Molaioli and Piero Messina.[6]
