Free Rein is a British television series created and written by Vicki Lutas and Anna McCleery.[1][2] The series stars Jaylen Barron, Céline Buckens, and Kerry Ingram.[3] The ten-part series premiered on Netflix on 22 June 2017. The show is produced in the UK by Lime Pictures. Although the island where the series is set is fictional and unnamed, it is based on the Isle of Wight but referred to as "an island off the coast of England" throughout the show. The scenes on the pier are shot in a town called Beaumaris, located on the isle of Anglesey. [4] The series has been renewed, and a second season of ten episodes will be produced.[5] The second season premiered on 6 July 2018. Shortly after, the show was renewed for a third season, as well as two feature length special episodes.

Cast

  • Jaylen Barron[3] as Zoe Phillips, a 15 year old girl from LA who spends the summer in her mother's hometown island in England, where she develops a kinship with a horse named Raven.
  • Freddy Carter[3] as Peter "Pin" Hawthorne, a quiet, mysterious and brooding stable boy whom initially Zoe finds suspicious. Pin is the son of Ted, while Pin's mother left the family when Pin was five to travel the world. Pin is the one who encourages Zoe to ride. Pin ultimately dates Zoe by the end of season 2. It's also revealed in the end of season 2 that he is a duke and inherits a fortune which he uses to buy Raven and Bright Fields Stables. He has a horse named Elvis.
  • Manpreet Bambra[3] as Jade, Zoe and Becky's best friend who rides at Bright Fields. She is very logical and practical.
  • Kerry Ingram[3] as Rebecca "Becky" Lavinia Sidebottom, Zoe and Jade's best friend who rides at Bright Fields. She is convinced of the existence of "Ghost Pony" and is Ben's older sister. Becky is impractical and hyper. Becky works part time at The Barley Bag Cafe. Becky and her brother own a black and white Pinto horse Gypsy horse named Bob.
  • Bruce Herbelin-Earle[3] as Marcus Greenbridge, a handsome, well-liked rider and trainer at Bright Fields, who has a past with Mia. He is Sam's cousin. He dates Zoe, but later they break up, and she begins to date Pin. At the end of season 1, he gets accepted into the academy; being the person from the island to go.
  • Céline Buckens[3] as Amelia "Mia" MacDonald, a snobby girl whose father financially supports Bright Fields. She and Zoe immediately clash. Mia is jealous of Zoe. After Episode 9, Mia and Zoe put aside their differences and become acqaintances. Mia owns Firefly.
  • Navia Robinson[3] as Rosie Phillips, Zoe's younger sister who has difficulty adjusting to England, but becomes friends with Ben.
  • Natalie Gumede [3] as Margaret "Maggie" Steel Phillips, Zoe and Rosie's overprotective mother. Maggie is a former equestrian. As a child she had a horse named Emerald. Maggie doesn't allow her daughters to be around horses out of fear that they'll get hurt. Maggie wants to keep her daughters safe and protect Zoe from Raven. Maggie forbids Zoe from riding because she and Emerald had an accident and they were both badly hurt. Emerald broke his leg in their accident after Maggie had a fight with her mom and ran away with him. Emerald couldn't be saved and died. Maggie blamed herself for Emerald's death. After their accident Maggie became afraid of horses and riding. Maggie eventually started riding again to help her accept the fact that Zoe was going to ride whether she liked it or not. Maggie reluctantly lets Zoe ride on the condition that she's careful. In season 2, she becomes the manager of Bright Fields.
  • Caroline Ford as Samantha "Sam" Myers (season 1), the sensible owner of Bright Fields and one of the trainers. She is Marcus' cousin. However, it is revealed that she had been working with the horse thieves who were trying to steal Raven.
  • Noah Huntley as Elliot MacDonald, Mia's wealthy, but often absent, father. Elliot is a childhood friend of Maggie and Ted. Elliot encourages Maggie to ride again. He gives Maggie riding lessons at night.
  • Geoffrey McGivern[3] as Francis "Frank" Steel, Maggie's father, Huck's father-in-law, and Zoe and Rosie's grandfather. Frank is fun loving. Upon the arrival of Zoe's family Frank is recovering from a broken foot. When Meredith arrives with papers proving that she's Raven's legal owner he tries to assure Zoe that Raven will always be in her heart.
  • Carla Woodcock as Susie, Mia's best friend who is often bossed around by Mia.
  • Billy Angel as Benjamin "Ben" Sidebottom, Becky's younger brother, who befriends Rosie.
  • Milo Twomey as Edward "Ted" Hawthorne, Pin's shifty father who has a past with Maggie. Ted is the one who buried Emerald when he died. Ted wants Pin to stay away from Zoe's family. Ted believes that Zoe will hurt Pin.
  • Holly Hayes as Meredith Moore, Raven's rightful owner. The final episode of Season 1 reveals that Raven was stolen from Meredith as a foal. Meredith explains that Raven's registered name is Midnight Blue and he's a racehorse. Meredith informs the gang that Raven is the offspring of the famous race horse Ruby Dawn. When Meredith shows up to legally take Raven home with her, he refuses to leave Bright Fields and Zoe. After Zoe reasons with Meredith, she agrees to board Raven at Bright Fields. She asks Zoe to train Raven for her despite the fact that she's flying home to LA. Zoe has to choose whether she is going to stay in England or return to LA, in which she chooses to stay.
  • Ryan Sands as Huck Phillips, Zoe and Rosie's laid back father, Maggie's husband, and Frank's son-in-law. Huck supports the fact that Zoe wants to ride.
  • Paul Luebke as Derek Wrigley (season 1), a police officer who comes to the stables occasionally and has a crush on Sam. In the Season 1 finale Derek is disappointed in Sam when he has to arrest her for helping a gang of horse thieves steal Raven and Firefly.
