Show Champion (Korean: 쇼 챔피언) is a South Korean music television program that broadcasts live every Wednesday 6:00 p.m. KST at Bitmaru Broadcasting Center in Ilsan by MBC Music.[1] It is hosted by comedian Kim Shin-young, and various guest MCs.[2]

Segment

The program aims the emcees, artists, and even the audience to be one in selecting “the champion” of music industry. It will also provide the most popular song, the hottest issue, and the best rookie of the week. The show has two different sets for singing and interviewing to combine characteristics of a variety show and a music program. In 2013, the show′s producers decided that the weekly music show would switch from pre-recorded format to a live show format. New changes to the show started with the episode on January 30, 2013.[3] Since 2015 it also has a Triple Crown system used in Inkigayo and The Show, where the song is not eligible for top 3 anymore after winning three times.

Hosts

Former MCs

  • Shindong (February 14, 2012 – December 25, 2012)
  • Kim Kyung Jin - Hot Issue Announcer (February 14, 2012 – December 25, 2012)
  • Ham Eunjung (January 30, 2013 – August 28, 2013)
  • Amber (January 30, 2013 – December 18, 2013)
  • Kangin (January 8, 2014 – December 31, 2014)
  • Doyoung (January 21, 2015 – July 1, 2015)
  • Jaehyun (January 21, 2015 – July 1, 2015)

Chart point system

Prior 2013, the program selected the top 10 of the week and the chart winner by combining the following:

  • 45% digital sales (Melon)
  • 10% physical sales (Hanteo)
  • 15% ranking from netizens
  • 15% ranking from professionals in the music industry
  • 15% points on MBC Music broadcast

The song at the top of chart earned the title “Champion Song”. On the other hand, the star with the hottest issue was named as “Issue Champion”, while the best rookie was called “Rookie Champion”. The feature “Rookie Survival” gained particular attention because the audience was able to give scores during the live broadcast.[4]

On September 4, 2012 the program was reorganized and the chart ranking system was abolished.

In 2013, the show underwent another reorganization, which resulted in the resurrection of the "Champion Song" ranking system with new criteria starting from January 30.

  • 50% digital sales (streaming + downloads)
  • 15% online voting (Melon)
  • 20% physical sales (Hanteo)
  • 15% ranking from professionals and expert judges (MBC Music)

In 2017, the show underwent another change of chart point system, with the new criteria below.

  • 40% Digital
  • 10% Album
  • 20% Melon Online Voting
  • 15% Ranking from expert and professional judges
  • 15% Broadcast[5]

The current criteria for the chart point system is as below:

  • 30% Digital
  • 20% Idol Champ Pre-Voting
  • 20% Genie Pre-Voting
  • 10% MBC Music Broadcast
  • 10% Critics' Choice
  • 10% Album Sales
