Roman Baber is a Canadian politician, who was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Ontario in the 2018 provincial election.[1] He represents the riding of York Centre as a member of the Progressive Conservative Party of Ontario.

Early Life

Baber was born and raised in the Soviet Union until 1989 and then lived in Israel until age fifteen. He came to Canada with his family in 1995 and settled in North York. Baber went to high school at William Lyon Mackenzie Collegiate Institute and got a B.A. from York University and then went on to the Western to earn a law degree. [2]

Baber is a lifelong conservative and was President of the YorkU Conservative Club during his undergrad days. [3]

He is a member of the Order of the Knights of Rizal and a global order of knighthood in the Philippines and around the world. [4]

Baber was called to the Ontario Bar in 2006 and then went onto join a Bay Street law firm before opening up his own firm, Taylor, Baber and Mergui which he remained a partner at until his election. [5]

Political career

Baber defeated the former federal finance minister Joe Oliver for the Progressive Conservative Party of Ontario nomination in York Centre for the 2018 Ontario election. Oliver lost to Baber by a margin of 711 to 465, respectively, on January 15, 2017.[6]

On June 7, Baber defeated his nearest challenger by a two-one margin and claimed over 50% of the vote. The riding had not been held by Liberal MPP Monte Kwinter since 1985. [7]

Baber serves on the Standing committee for Government Agencies in addition to serving on the Justice Policy committee. Due to Baber's background as a lawyer, he was also appointed as a member of the Select Committee on Financial Transparency. [8][9][10]

In August 2018, Baber spoke vocally and held several meetings with elected and non-elected officials to condemn the protest which took place outside of B'nai Brith Canada's office on August 29, 2018 and ensure that everyone at the protest would be kept safe. [11][12][13]
