The Regions of the Democratic Federation of Northern Syria, formerly known as Cantons, are the three self-governing regions of the de facto autonomous region of the Democratic Federation of Northern Syria (DFNS). The Afrin, Jazira and Kobanî cantons were first established under the Constitution of Rojava in January 2014. In March 2016, the Shahba region was organized, however it was later formed into a canton of the Afrin region.

The three cantons were later reorganized into three regions with subordinate cantons, areas, districts and communes. Elections for the local councils of the local councils of the Jazira Region, Euphrates Region and Afrin Region will be held in December 2017.[1]

The regions act as the primary sub-division for a "future decentralized system of federal governance in Syria."[2]

Admission of new regions

The Rojava cantons as they were originally established in January 2014.

Article 7 of the Constitution of the DFNS states:[2]

All cities, towns and villages in Syria which accede to this Charter may form Cantons falling within Autonomous Regions.

Since the adoption of the Constitution, only the Shahba region (now the Shahba canton of the Afrin Region) has been added to the federation in March 2016.

The YPG has controlled Sheikh Maqsood since 2012, but this territory has never been incorporated into the North Syria Federation.
