Nataoran is one of the Formosan languages of the Amis and Sakizaya, indigenous peoples living along the east coast of Taiwan. The Sakizaya variety is highly divergent and is sometimes considered a separate language from Nataoran, but in recent years both have begun to converge with Central Amis, which is culturally dominant.
Controversies
Nataoran is officially classified as a dialect of Amis by the international standard-keeper of SIL/Ethnologue[3], but in the statement from the Taiwan government[4], Nataoran is not included. There are some arguments about the categorization at present.
