Municipal elections were held in fourteen municipalities of Montenegro on 23 May 2010.
Background
An opposition coalition called "A Better Montenegro" (encompassing the Socialist People's Party of Montenegro, New Serb Democracy, the Movement for Changes and almost all other, minor opposition parties) was formed for these elections.[1]
The governing coalition, consisting of the Democratic Party of Socialists (DPS) and its smaller partner, the Social Democratic Party (SDP) did not run jointly in all minicipalities:
- In Podgorica, DPS ran in a coalition with Bosniak Party and Liberal Party; SDP ran alone.
- In Ulcinj, DPS ran in a coalition with Democratic Union of Albanians and Party of Democratic Prosperity; SDP ran alone.
- In Andrijevica, Kolašin and Rožaje, both DPS and SDP ran alone.
- In Bar, Berane, Bijelo Polje, Danilovgrad, Pljevlja, Šavnik and Žabljak, DPS and SDP ran in a coalition
Results
The results saw the ruling DPS stay in power in most municipalities. It held an absolute majority in Bar, Berane, Bijelo Polje, Danilovgrad, Rožaje, Šavnik and Žabljak, formed ruling coalitions with SDP in Andrijevica, Podgorica and Ulcinj, and with smaller parties in Kolašin. The opposition won only in Pljevlja and Plužine.[2]
