Majid Jowhari MP (Persian: مجید جوهری) is a Canadian Liberal politician who represents the riding of Richmond Hill in the House of Commons of Canada. He was elected in the 2015 federal election[1][2] and is the first federal party nominee and candidate of Iranian heritage.[3]

Early life and career

Jowhari attended Ryerson University, earning a Bachelor of Technology in industrial engineering, and York University's Schulich School of Business, where he earned an MBA. He founded his own boutique consulting firm to provide advice to chief financial officers.[4]

Federal politics

Jowhari was elected as the Liberal Party's candidate in Richmond Hill on September 7, 2014. He was elected to the seat in the October 19, 2015 election, narrowly defeating Conservative candidate Michael Parsa.[1]

Jowhari was a licensed Professional Engineer from 1995-1999 and, upon changing fields, did not renew his license which was cancelled due to non-payment. He apologized on November 14, 2016 for using the restricted title engineer when describing his past credentials in the 2015 federal election.[5]

Mental health

In 2018, the Canadian Alliance on Mental Illness and Mental Health (CAMIMH) named Majid Jowhari as a Parliamentary Mental Health Champion. Each year, the organization selects individuals and organizations as Champions to recognize them for their contributions to mental health in Canada. According to the CAMIHM, "Majid Jowhari is a staunch advocate for mental health in Canada. He drafted and introduced legislation to change the criminal code, which would take mental health information into account during pre-sentencing, and founded and chaired the Liberal Mental Health Caucus, and later, the Parliamentary Mental Health Caucus, reaching across party lines to bring mental health to the forefront of discussion on the Hill."[6]

Majid Jowhari was named the 2018 Parliamentary Champion alongside champions representing youth, media, and research, and who have bettered their communities and workplaces at an event held Tuesday, May 8, hosted by the Minister of Health, the Honourable Ginette Petitpas Taylor, as well as comedian and author Jessica Holmes.[7]

"When I arrived in Canada as a young man, transitioning into a new lifestyle in a new country, I struggled – as did many of the students around me – with what we now rightfully call mental health." said Majid Jowhari, "We didn’t talk about it back then, understand it, or have access to the services so many Canadians rely on today. It’s one of the reasons I’ve committed to ending the stigma, raising the issue in Parliament, and advocating for a new paradigm that will bring our mental health services into line with the healthcare standards Canadians across the country take pride in."[8]
