List of law enforcement agencies in Alabama

This is a list of law enforcement agencies in the state of Alabama.

According to the US Bureau of Justice Statistics' 2008 Census of State and Local Law Enforcement Agencies, the state had 417 law enforcement agencies employing 11,631 sworn police officers, about 251 for each 100,000 residents.[1]

State Agencies

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency is a law enforcement agency serving the U.S. state of Alabama. It was formed on 1 January 2015 by the merger of the following state law enforcement agencies:[2][3]

  • United States Marshals Service (federal agency which by statute has the authority of the sheriff in any local jurisdiction [25])(Office of the United States Marshal for the Northern, Middle, and Southern Districts of Alabama)
  • Other federal agencies (including the FBI, DEA, ATF, USSS, VA Police, etc.)
  • Military Police (active and reserve of the various United States Armed Forces)
  • Alabama Protection Services of Homeland Security
  • Birmingham Office of the Inspector General
  • Guntersville Fire Marshal's Office
  • Huntsville-Madison Airport Police (Huntsville International Airport Police Department)
  • Marshall Space Flight Center Protective Services Office
  • Alabama State Defense Force Military Police (if any, remains under gubernatorial control)
  • Briarwood Presbyterian Church and School Police (Proposed)
