This is a list of current United States governors by previous experience. As of 2018, 12 governors (both state and territorial) have served as Lieutenant Governor immediately prior to their service as Governor, 6 have served in the U.S. House of Representatives, 5 as state attorney general, 5 as mayor, 4 in the state upper house,[1] 2 in appointed state government positions, 3 in the state lower house, 2 as state treasurer, 2 as U.S. attorney, 2 in the U.S. Senate, and 1 each in an appointed federal government position, as county executive, as district attorney, as a district court judge, as a member of a state executive body, as national party chair, and as state secretary of state. Additionally, 10 have had no previous government experience.
