This is a list of American films released in 2016.


Box office records

  • On February 11, Deadpool earned $12.7 million in Thursday night previews, breaking the record for an R-rated preview and surpassing The Hangover Part II ($10.4 million on 26 May 2011).[1] Between February 11th and 12th, the film grossed $47.5 million, surpassing The Matrix Reloaded for the largest single-day R-rated gross ($42.5 million on 15 May 2003). The film grossed $135 million in its opening weekend, again surpassing The Matrix Reloaded ($91.8 million on 15–17 May 2003) for all-time R-rated opening weekend, and surpassing Fifty Shades of Grey for an R-rated opening in February ($85.2 million on 13–15 February 2015); earning another $17.25 million on Monday the 15th, the film grossed $150 million over Presidents' Day Weekend, surpassing Fifty Shades of Grey ($93 million on 13–16 February 2015). On February 20, the film became the 13th R-rated film to reach $200 million and the fastest R-rated film to do so, achieving the milestone in nine days, surpassing The Matrix Reloaded (which took eleven days to reach the benchmark).[2] On February 24, the film became the 6th R-rated film to reach $250 million and the fastest R-rated film to do so, achieving the milestone in 13 days, surpassing The Passion of the Christ (which took 18 days to reach the benchmark). On March 5, the film became just the third R-rated film to reach $300 million and the fastest R-rated film to do so, achieving the milestone in 23 days, surpassing The Passion of the Christ (which took 29 days to reach the benchmark). On March 29, the film became just the third R-rated film to reach $350 million and the fastest R-rated film to do so, achieving the milestone in 47 days, tying Passion of the Christ; on that date, the film also surpassed American Sniper to become the second-highest grossing R-rated film of all time.
  • On March 25–27, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice earned $166 million, breaking the records for a March opening weekend, a Spring opening weekend (surpassing The Hunger Games with $152.5 million on 23–25 March 2012 for both), and an Easter opening weekend (surpassing Furious 7 with $147.19 million on 3–5 April 2015); the opening weekend was also the seventh-largest of all time, as well as the fourth-largest for a comic-book adaptation (behind The Avengers, Age of Ultron, and Iron Man 3). The film's weekend gross included an $81.56 million opening day on March 25, which is the fifth-largest single day gross, the fifth-largest opening day gross, and the fifth-largest Friday gross (in each case behind The Force Awakens, The Deathly Hallows II, Age of Ultron, and Jurassic World), and the second-larges Friday gross for a comic book adaptation; a $50.66 million Saturday, which was the 35th-largest single day gross, the ninth-largest Saturday gross, and fifth-largest Saturday gross for a comic book adaptation; and a $33.79 million Sunday, which was the 131st-largest single day gross, the 21st-largest Sunday gross, and the eighth-largest Sunday gross for a comic book adaptation. The film also experienced a 55% decrease in box office revenue from Friday to Sunday, including a 38% decrease from Friday to Saturday and another 27% decrease from Saturday to Sunday, setting a record for the Friday-to-Sunday decrease of a comic book adaptation. On March 28, the film grossed another $15.04 million, breaking the record for a Monday in March, and surpassing The Hunger Games ($10.82 million on 26 March 2012). On April 13, the film became the 56th to gross more than $300 million, the 13th comic book adaptation to do so, and the 20th fastest film to reach the benchmark (achieving the milestone in twenty days).
  • On April 15, Zootopia became the tenth animated film, and the 57th film overall, to gross more than $300 million, becoming the 39th fastest film to reach the benchmark (achieving the milestone in 43 days).
  • On May 14, The Jungle Book became the 58th film overall, to gross more than $300 million becoming the 29th fastest to reach the benchmark (achieving the milestone in 30 days).
  • On May 17, Captain America: Civil War became the 59th film to gross more than $300 million, the 14th comic book adaptation to do so, and the sixth fastest film to reach the benchmark (achieving the milestone in eleven days). On May 23, the film became the 32nd to gross more than $350 million, the ninth comic book adaptation to do so, and the eighth fastest film to reach the benchmark (achieving the milestone in 18 days). On June 18, the film became the 19th to gross more than $400, the seventh comic book adaptation to do so, and the tenth fastest film to reach the benchmark (achieving the milestone in 44 days).
  • On June 16, Finding Dory grossed $9.2 million, surpassing Minions for biggest Thursday night preview gross for an animated film ($6.2 million on July 9 2015). On June 17, the film grossed another $54.9 million, becoming the first animated film ever to gross more than $50 million in a single day and surpassing Minions for biggest opening day gross for an animated film ($46.2 million on 10 July 2015) and Shrek the Third for biggest single day gross for an animated film ($47.1 million on 19 May 2007). On June 18, the film grossed another $45.8 million, the second-highest Saturday gross for an animated film behind Shrek the Third ($47.08 million on 19 May 2007); on June 19, the film grossed another $35.5, the second-highest Sunday gross for an animated film behind Shrek the Third ($36.1 million on 20 May 2007). On June 16–19, the film grossed a total of $135.06 million, surpassing Shrek the Third for the opening weekend and a summer opening weekend of an animated film and a PG-rated opening weekend ($121.6 on 18–20 May 2007) and surpassing Toy Story 3 for a June opening weekend of an animated film ($110.3 on 18–20 June 2010). On June 20, the film grossed another $19.57 million for the second-largest Monday gross for an animated film behind Shrek 2 ($23.41 million on 31 May 2004). On June 21, the film grossed another $23.2 million for the largest Tuesday gross for an animated film, surpassing Minions ($16.8 million on 14 July 2015), and the sixth-largest Tuesday gross ever. On June 23, the film grossed another $18.1 million for the largest non-opening Wednesday gross for an animated film, surpassing Frozen ($15.16 million on 27 November 2013), and the third largest Wednesday gross for an animated film (behind Despicable Me 2's opening day of $35 million on 3 July 2013 and Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel's opening day of $18.8 million on 23 December 2009). On June 24–26, the film grossed a total of $72.96 million, surpassing Shrek 2 for the second weekend of an animated film ($72.10 million on 28–30 May 2004) and the eighth-largest second-weekend gross ever. On June 28, the film became the 60th to gross more than $300 million, the eleventh animated film to do so, the seventh fastest film to reach the benchmark and the fastest animated film to do so (achieving the milestone in twelve days). On July 1–3, the film grossed a total of $41.9 million, surpassing Shrek 2 for the biggest third-weekend of an animated film ($37.93 million on 4–6 June 2004) and the eighth largest third-weekend gross ever; it was also the 15th largest Independence Day weekend gross, the second largest Independence Day weekend gross for an animated film (behind Despicable Me 2's opening weekend of $83.52 million on 5–7 July 2013), and the second largest non-opening Independence Day weekend (behind Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen's $42.32 weekend on 3–5 July 2009). On July 2, the film became the 34th to gross more than $350 million, the fifth animated film to do so, tying for the fifth fastest film to reach the benchmark (with Avengers: Age of Ultron) and becoming the fastest animated film to do so (achieving the milestone in sixteen days, and surpassing Shrek 2, which took 26 days). On July 7, the film became the 20th to gross more than $400 million, the fourth animated film to do so, becoming the fifth fastest film to reach the benchmark and the fastest animated film to do so (achieving the milestone in 21 days, and surpassing Shrek 2, which took 43 days). On July 16, in its thirtieth day of release, the film became the highest-grossing domestic animated film of all time, surpassing Shrek 2 ($441.2 million in 2004). On July 20, the film became the eighth to gross more than $450 million, the first animated film ever to do so and becoming the sixth fastest film to reach the benchmark (achieving the milestone in 34 days).
  • On August 5, Suicide Squad earned $64.9 million, breaking the records for an August opening day gross, an August Friday gross, and an August single day gross (surpassing Guardians of the Galaxy with $37.8 million on 1 August 2014 for all). On August 6, the film grossed another $38.6 million for the second-largest single day gross in August, and breaking the record for an August Saturday gross (surpassing Guardians of the Galaxy with $30.99 million on 2 August 2014). On August 7, the film grossed another $30.2 million for the fifth-largest single day gross in August, and breaking the record for an August Sunday gross (surpassing Guardians of the Galaxy with $25.5 million on 3 August 2014). On August 5–7, the film earned $133.7 million, breaking the record for an August opening weekend (surpassing Guardians of the Galaxy with $94.3 million on 1–3 August 2014) to become the first film with an opening weekend of more than $100 million in August. On August 8, the film grossed another $13.1 million, breaking the record for an August Monday gross (surpassing Guardians of the Galaxy with $11.7 million on 4 August 2014). On August 9, the film grossed another $14.3 million, breaking the record for an August Tuesday gross (surpassing Guardians of the Galaxy with $11.9 million on 5 August 2014). On August 10, the film grossed another $9.8 million for the second-largest August Wednesday gross (behind Pineapple Express's opening day gross of $12.1 million on 6 August 2008), and breaking the record a non-opening August Wednesday gross (surpassing Guardians of the Galaxy with $8.8 million on 6 August 2014). On August 11, the film grossed another $8.2 million, breaking the record for an August Thursday gross (surpassing Guardians of the Galaxy with $7.6 million on 7 August 2014). On September 5, the film became the 62nd to gross more than $300 million, the 14th comic book adaptation to do so, and the 35th fastest film to reach the benchmark (achieving the milestone in 32 days).
