Lauren Cohan (born January 7, 1982) is an American actress and model.[1][2] She is known for her role as Maggie Greene on the horror drama series The Walking Dead (2011–present).

She is also known for her roles as Bela Talbot on the fantasy horror series Supernatural (2007–08), Rose on the supernatural drama series The Vampire Diaries (2010–12), and Vivian McArthur Volkoff on the action comedy series Chuck (2011). In addition to her television career, Cohan has also appeared in several films, such as the comedy film Van Wilder: The Rise of Taj (2006), the psychological thriller horror film The Boy, the superhero film Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016), and the biographical drama All Eyez on Me (2017).

Early life

Cohan was born in Cherry Hill, New Jersey[3][4][5][6][7] (although some sources incorrectly cite Philadelphia, Pennsylvania)[1][8] on January 7, 1982, the daughter of an American father and an English mother. She also has Irish, Norwegian, and Scottish ancestry.[9][8] During her childhood, Cohan lived in Cherry Hill[3] and, for one year, Georgia,[10] before moving to England at age 13.[11]

When Cohan's mother remarried, she took her new husband's surname, Cohan, and converted to Judaism. Cohan also converted to Judaism at age five,[8] and had a Bat Mitzvah ceremony.[12] She has four younger siblings[13] and one step-sister.[14] Cohan graduated from the University of Winchester[15] with a BA degree in drama and English literature, before touring with a theatre company she had co-founded at the university. Cohan then split her time and work between London and Los Angeles,[16] working on several films as well as some non-commercial projects.

Career

Lauren Cohan at the 2013 San Diego Comic Con International in San Diego, California.

Film

After her film debut Casanova as Sister Beatrice, she starred in the sequel to Van Wilder, Van Wilder: The Rise of Taj as Charlotte Higginson in 2006. Her next role was in the 2008 film Float. In February 2010, she was cast in Death Race 2,[17] and also has the lead role in the 2016 supernatural-horror The Boy.[18] In 2016 she also had a cameo as Martha Wayne in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and in 2017 she played Leila Steinberg in the biographical drama All Eyez on Me. In 2018 she starred in the action thriller film Mile 22 directed by Peter Berg.

Television

In 2007, Cohan gained her first major supporting role – partially also described as a season lead, when she was cast for season three of Supernatural as Bela Talbot, a thief who procures valuable supernatural objects and sells them to very rich, very powerful people in the supernatural world. The character appeared in six episodes of the series, her last in the penultimate episode of season three.[19]

Cohan played the recurring character Rose, a 560-year-old vampire, in The Vampire Diaries. In 2011, she joined the television series Chuck in a recurring role playing Vivian McArthur Volkoff, a "charming, sophisticated socialite" from the United Kingdom, and the daughter of primary villain, Alexei Volkoff. She also guest starred on shows such as Modern Family, CSI: NY, Cold Case, Life, Archer, and The Bold and the Beautiful.

Cohan starred in a pilot for The CW called Heavenly in which she played the lead character, an attorney who teams up with an angel; however, it was not picked up as a series.[20]

In 2011, Cohan was cast in her most notable role as Maggie Greene on The Walking Dead, an AMC horror drama series based on the comic book series of the same name. She first appeared in the second season as a recurring character, but she was among the starring roles at the start of the third season. The drama was the highest rated series in cable television history in 2015.[21] At the conclusion of the eight season, Cohan finished her contract on The Walking Dead as a series regular. It was later reported Cohan had not reached an agreement to sign on for season 9 as a main cast member due to a pay dispute, as she demanded an enhanced salary closer to her male co-stars Andrew Lincoln and Norman Reedus. AMC refused, and Cohan began making herself available for TV pilots.[22] She booked the role of CIA operative Francesca "Frankie" Trowbridge in the ABC pilot Whiskey Cavalier, co-starring with Scott Foley.[23] It was later confirmed she had reached an agreement to appear in season 9 under a limited capacity of 6 episodes in the first half of season 9.[24] Later, it was confirmed Whiskey Cavalier was picked up to series.[25]
