KFLC (1270 kHz) is a commercial AM radio station licensed to Benbrook, Texas and broadcasting to the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex. The station is owned by Univision Radio. KFLC airs a Spanish language sports radio format, primarily airing programming from the co-owned Univision Deportes Radio Network. It also carries play by play featuring Texas Rangers baseball, Dallas Mavericks basketball and FC Dallas soccer.

KFLC is a Class B regional station. By day it operates at 50,000 watts, the maximum power permitted for commercial AM radio stations. But at night, to protect other stations on AM 1270, it reduces power to 5,000 watts. It uses a directional antenna at all times. KFLC's transmitter is located off East Lancaster Avenue (Route 180) in Fort Worth.[1] The station's studios are located along the John W. Carpenter Freeway in the Stemmons Corridor of Northwest Dallas. KFLC is licensed by iBiquity to broadcast a digital signal using the HD system.[2][3]

History

In 1924, the KFLC call sign was used in Dallas at 1330 kHz for a temporary station set up at the State Fair of Texas.

The station that became today's KFLC signed on in 1924 at 1180 kHz as KFJZ. KFJZ later moved to 1140, 1200, 1370 (1928) and 1240 (1939) before settling on its permanent home of 1270 in the early 1940s. During the 1960s and 1970s, KFJZ was a leading Top 40 station in Fort Worth. (The KFJZ call letters were reassigned to frequency 870 kHz and is now a Business Talk station.) In 1980, AM 1270 changed format to Music of Your Life adult standards (having moved the Top 40 format onto KFJZ-FM 97.1).

Marcos A. Rodriguez purchased the station in November 1986 and moved a Regional Mexican music format from FM (see KLTY) to the AM dial. AM 1270 has been a Spanish-language station since then, under various call signs, including KESS (from 1986 until 2004, when the current KFLC calls were instituted).

The station has operated from tower sites in Birdville (north east Fort Worth), 4801 West Vickery (now site of a school) in south west Fort Worth, and the present site on the Arlington/Fort Worth line. From 1976 to 2006 the station operated at 5,000 watts on six towers (nominal power while actual input was 5,400 watts by day and 4,600 by night). A refit spearheaded by station engineering manager Patrick Parks and VP/Engineering David Stewart led to a rebuild, new towers, and a power increase to 50,000 watts. Matt Folkert at duTreil, Lundin and Rackley designed the new digital capable phasing and distribution system.

Even before switching to the current all-sports format, KFLC was the first station to broadcast Dallas Mavericks basketball games in Spanish. By the early 2000s, KFLC began eliminating music programming most of the day to air local Spanish-language talk shows. Starting on July 4, 2012, KFLC became part of the Univision America Talk Radio network.[4] The station began calling itself "Univision America Dallas 1270."

In 2015, KFLC ended the Univision America news/talk format in favor of Spanish-language Contemporary Christian music as "Amor Celestial 1270" (translated to "Heavenly Love 1270").

On December 20, 2016, Univision announced that KFLC would be one of the charter network affiliates of Univision Deportes Radio, a Spanish-language sports network, which launched on April 19, 2017.[5] The station signed up to air Texas Rangers baseball games till at least 2019. KESS had previously broadcast Rangers games from 1999 to 2010. KFLC also continues to carry Dallas Mavericks games as well as adding FC Dallas games. This move filled the Spanish Sports hole since KZMP 1540 AM swapped from ESPN Deportes Radio to a simulcast of an FM Regional Mexican station. KZMP has since returned to ESPN Deportes and now, KFLC competes with them head on.
