Jerome Historic District, in Jerome, Arizona, is a historic district that is significant for its association with copper mining. The district was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1966 [2][3] and was included into the then-new National Register of Historic Places.

Jerome

Jerome is a town in the Black Hills of Yavapai County, Arizona. It was founded in the late 19th century on Cleopatra Hill overlooking the Verde Valley.

Jerome Historical Society

The Jerome Historical Society was founded in 1953 and is located at 407 Clark Street, within the district. In 1956 the society completed negotiations with Phelps Dodge assuring that no more buildings would be torn down in the main part of Jerome. The aim of the society is to "protect, preserve and present the unique physical and natural history of Jerome…for the benefit of residents and current and future generations.”[4] The society maintains a variety of buildings, museums and special projects in and around Jerome.[5]

Numerous properties within the district are historical, though others are not. Structures identified as historical by the Jerome Historical Society Plaque Project have a mounted plaque, placed by the society.[6][7] The historic properties include:

Jerome Grand Hotel 200 Hill Street Built 1926-27 as the United Verde Hospital, later known as the Phelps Dodge Hospital. It was a state-of-the-art medical facility, was closed in 1950. It was reopened as a hotel in 1996.[8]

Jerome Palace 410 Clark Street Built in the 1900s, now home to the “Haunted Hamburger”.[7]
Lawrence Memorial Hall
a.k.a. "Spook Hall"		 Hull Avenue Built in 1917 as a garage before it became the home of a J.C. Penney store from 1937 to 1953.[7]
Liberty Theatre Jerome Avenue silent movie theater built in 1918. It closed its doors as a theater in 1929.[12]
Little Daisy Hotel 100 Douglas Road Built in 1917.[7]
Paul & Jerry's Saloon 206 Main Street Built in 1899. Served as the Senate Saloon downstairs and a Chinese Restaurant upstairs.[7][13]
Reese and Amster Garage 111 Main Street Built in 1920.[7][14]
Surgeon’s Mansion 100 Hill Street Built in 1917 and served as the residence of the chief surgeon of the United Verde Copper Company’s hospital.[15]
New State Motor Building Built in 1918. It was a car dealership and show room upstairs and a garage downstairs.[7][16]
Whitten Printers Main Street and Jerome Avenue Built in 1917.[7][17]
Haven Methodist Church Main Street Built in 1927.[7]
Jerome Episcopal Christ Church 407 Clark Street Built in 1926. It is currently used as the archives and administrative offices of the Jerome Historical Society.[18]
Powder Box Church Built in 1939 by Sabino Gonzales with stucco, wire mesh and blasting powder boxes.[19]
Sliding Jail Hull Avenue Built in 1905. It was originally located between Main Street and Hull Ave. The building was pulled apart from the wood structure to which it was attached and in the mid 30’s and began its 225 feet slide to the middle of Hull Ave.[7][20]
Sullivan Apartments 367 Main Street Built in 1917.[21]
Gibson Market 681 Hampshire Avenue Built in 1917.[22]
Main Street Primary School Built in 1914. Was located in the intersection of Main Street (Arizona Route 89A) and Verde Avenue before it was demolished in 1945. [23]
Laura Williams Memorial Park Site where Laura Williams owned the antique museum which housed numerous artifacts from Jerome.[24]
Audrey Shaft Headframe Audrey Shaft headframe built in 1918. It is the largest wooden headframe still standing in Arizona. It is located on the State Park Road.[7][25]
Husband's Alley Hull Avenue A 1913 Red Light District located on Hull Ave.[7][26]
Fire Alarm Bell Main Street 1898 town fire bell[7]
Jerome Fire Fighting equipment 1890 fire fighting equipment[7]
Jerome Blast Furnace 303 Main Street Jerome blast furnace, one of two furnaces found in 1888 on the Hampton Lode, United Verde Copper Company Mine by W. A. Clark.[7][27]
