Israel Mobolaji Adesanya (born July 22, 1989) is a Nigerian-New Zealander mixed martial artist and former kickboxer currently fighting in the Middleweight division of the Ultimate Fighting Championship. In October 2017, he was ranked #6 middleweight worldwide in kickboxing by CombatPress.com.[2] As of July 26, 2018, he is #9 in the official UFC middleweight rankings.[3]
Background
Adesanya was born in Lagos, Nigeria. He trained taekwondo for a brief time but was removed by his mother after breaking his arm, and many items in the house while practising. In 2001 (aged 11 or 12) he moved to Whanganui, New Zealand,and at age 18 after being inspired by the Muay Thai film ‘Ong Bak’ started training kickboxing. Adesanya amassed a professional record of 32-0 prior to moving and fighting in China.[4]
Mixed martial arts career
Early career
Adesanya made his professional debut in 2012. Fighting in New Zealand, Australia and China over the next five-and-a-half years, he amassed a record of 11-0 with all wins coming via TKO stoppage prior to being signed by the UFC.[5]
Ultimate Fighting Championship
In December 2017, it was announced that Adesanya had signed with the UFC. He made his debut against Rob Wilkinson on February 11, 2018 at UFC 221.[6] He won the fight via TKO in the second round.[7] This win earned him the Performance of the Night bonus.[8]
Adesanya's next fight was scheduled on April 14, 2018 against Marvin Vettori at UFC on Fox 29.[9] He won the fight via split decision.[10]
Adesanya faced Brad Tavares on July 6, 2018 at The Ultimate Fighter 27 Finale.[11] Adesanya won the fight via unanimous decision.[12] This win earned him the Performance of the Night award.[13]
Adesanya is expected to face Derek Brunson on November 3, 2018 at UFC 230.[14]
