Since the AFC Asian Cup was founded in 1956, India had qualified for four Asian Cups: 1964, 1984, 2011, and the upcoming 2019 edition.[1]
India is one of the earliest participants in the Asian Cup, by qualified to the 1964 AFC Asian Cup held in Israel. Those days, India was still on their golden generation, and had won the Asian Cup's silver medal after losing to Israel. This would remain as India's only appearance until 20 years later in 1984 AFC Asian Cup, but being weakened due to the rise of India's cricket, India failed to win any matches and finished last with one point. India would have not qualified for the next 27 years, and only winning the 2008 AFC Challenge Cup that saw India again in 2011 AFC Asian Cup. India however, didn't have to wait for more than 20 years, because only after 8 years India will make their next appearance in 2019 AFC Asian Cup.[2]
