Idham Chalid (Satui, Tanah Bumbu Regency, South Kalimantan, Dutch East Indies, August 27, 1921 – Jakarta, Indonesia, July 11, 2010, at the age of 88 years) was an influential politician and minister in Indonesia. Apart from being a politician, he was active in religious activities and served as the second Chairman of the Executive Committee of Nahdlatul Ulama.

Career

Since he was a teenager, Idham's career at NU continues to climb. When NU was still in the Masjumi (1950), he became the chairman of the Star Crescent Party in South Kalimantan. Meanwhile, he was also a member of the House of Representatives of the United States of the Republic of Indonesia (RIS) (1949–1950). Two years later, he was elected chairman of the Idham Maarif NU Institute of Education (1952–1956). Later, he was chosen to be the chairman of NU in 1956. In fact, he is the longest serving chairman of NU.

Meanwhile, in the executive branch of the state government, he was appointed minister several times, both during the Old Order and the New Order. When Bung Karno fell in 1966, he became a presidium member of Cabinet Ampera I and Ampera Cabinet II; he was made chairman of the MPR / DPR for the period of 1971–1977. Much earlier, during the Cabinet Sastroamidjojo II, he also served as deputy PM. Lastly, he also served as Chairman DPA.

National Hero

Idham was named a National Hero of Indonesia, along with six other figures, based on 113/TK/Tahun Presidential Decree No. 2011 dated 7 November 2011. Following the issuance of Presidential Decree No. 31 of 5 September 2016, Bank Indonesia introduced seven new banknote designs featuring several national heroes which were never featured before on Indonesian banknotes. His face is featured on the obverse of Rp 5,000.00 banknote, which was issued on 19 December 2016.
