The Foundation University, Islamabad (FUI), is a private university located in Islamabad, Pakistan. It has two campuses in Islamabad & Rawalpindi.

FUI has been established as a private sector university, sponsored by the Fauji Foundation which is the largest welfare organization in the country. FUI was granted its charter by the Federal Government vide Ordinance No. LXXXVIII of 2002.

In a university category list issued by the Higher Education Commission (HEC) in 2005, Foundation University was placed in the “A” category, along with other top-ranking universities of Pakistan such as LUMS, NUST. According to the ranking (2013) of HEC, Foundation University has been placed in the highest W-4 category of Higher Education Institutes in Pakistan, FUI was ranked 45th with a score of 41.7.[1]

Foundation University Rawalpindi Campus (FURC)

The FURC was established in December 1998. After gaining the charter of the university, FURC became one of its constituent institutions in October 2002. Prior to that, it was affiliated with IBA and UET respectively for different disciplines. FURC has three faculties: Faculty of Engineering & IT, Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences & Faculty of Business and Technology. The Management Sciences Programs of study are duly accredited by HEC.

Faculty of Engineering & IT:

The Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology endeavors to produce competent engineers and computer scientist who can play a productive role in the industry, academia, and research. The faculty uses modern technologies to enhance the learning capabilities of the students and to provide them with a stimulating and challenging environment. Emphasis is put on the practical applications of engineering and computer science to meet the software and hardware needs of the global industry in general and Pakistani industry in particular. The Faculty offers courses in Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering and Computer Science leading to Bachelor's (BS), Master's (MS) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.). A strong curriculum in a respective discipline is offered by the requisitely qualified faculty. The laboratories are equipped with the latest facilities to cater for all undergraduate practical work. Lab Equipment is continuously upgraded to keep abreast with the latest technological developments.

Faculty of Business & Technology:

The Faculty of Business & Technology is considered one of the best when it comes to professional business/management education within the country. Graduates of B & T faculty are placed in leading national/ international corporate sector, government institutions, academia and various well-reputed conglomerates. The strong focus is laid on academic excellence by ensuring outcome-based education. Students are not only given a cognitive understanding of the subject area they learn; specific focus is also laid on the development of their professional and social skills in total.

Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences:

In Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences programs, our students learn to think critically and argue persuasively. They gain important life related and profession-related skills in methods of research and data analysis. They are taught how cultural, economic, political, psychological, and social phenomena influence human behavior. They gain the theoretical and practical knowledge necessary to live an informed life. Our mission is the promotion of learning and the protection of knowledge, the cultivation of free thought, independent academic research and the support of the creative spirit of human society. The Faculty´s main objective is to develop teaching and research in those aspects of the social sciences which directly or indirectly relate to the public or to the economic and cultural life of society.

Foundation University Islamabad Campus (FUIC)

The FUIC consists of Foundation University Medical College (FUMC), Foundation University College of Dentistry (FUCD), Foundation University Institute of Rehabilitation Sciences (FUIRS), the University Secretariat and Fauji Foundation Hospital (FFH) (Teaching Hospital of FUMC).

Foundation University Medical College (FUMC)

The Foundation University Medical College (FUMC) was established in the year 2000. The intake of the College is 150 students per year. FUMC is also recognized by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Pakistan (CPSP) for FCPS Part II training. The College is housed in a complex of its own, with hostels for boys and girls located within the same premises. The College is listed in the International Medical Education Directory (IMED) and is a member of International Association of Medical Regulatory Authority (IAMRA). The College has also been included in the World Directory of Medical Schools (WDMS) by WHO, making its students eligible to appear in the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) and United Kingdom Professional and Linguistic Assessments Board (PLAB). Conventional modalities of teaching in the form of lectures, seminars, classroom laboratory teaching has been replaced at FUMC by integrated modular systems like PBL (Problem Based Learning) which is more patient oriented and evidence based. The College is also regularly publishing a multi-disciplinary Journal of Bio-medical Sciences.

Foundation University College of Dentistry (FUCD)

FOUNDATION UNIVERSITY COLLEGE OF DENTISTRY Since its inception in early 2014, Foundation University College of Dentistry (FUCD) has embraced upon a new journey with an aim to be known as one of Pakistan’s most welcoming and inclusive institutions of graduate & Post graduate education in dentistry. FUCD aims to produce dentists who are capable to serve the oral health needs of population with competence. FUCD believes in innovating the traditional curriculum by adopting a system-based, integrated modular curriculum which is already in vogue at most modern institutes of the country and world. The student are educated in basic medical and dental sciences in the initial two years and are trained in different clinical specialties in third and final years including Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Operative/Restorative Dentistry, Prosthodontics, Periodontics and Orthodontics on simulated models (phantom heads) and as well as live clinical scenarios. FUCD offers the most modern and state of the art clinical facilities available in the country with services ranging from fillings and root canal treatments Dentures to Orthodontics Implants and Major surgeries of the jaws, mouth and face. It houses its own Central Sterilization and Supply Department (CSSD), specially designed for enabling the clinicians to provide quality care with absolutely no compromise on sterilization and cross-infection control. The clinical setting is fully equipped with digital radiography systems including periapical, OPGs and Cephalometric X-rays to CT scans and MRI. Dean of the institution is Professor Dr Muhammad Azhar Sheikh, BDS, M.Sc (Lond), FDS RCS (Eng) FDS RCS (Ire) and FDS Oral Surgery (UK) Where as Dr. Sidra Aamer and Dr. Nadia Amman are serving as Associate Dean (Basic Sciences) and Associate Dean (Clinical Sciences) of FUCD respectively. Foundation University college of dentistry has two major Departments which includes Department of BASIC SCIENCES & Department of CLINICAL SCIENCES with their respective sub-departments.

DEPARTMENT OF BASIC SCIENCES

Department of oral biology and tooth morphology:

Oral biology & tooth morphology is a foundation course in dentistry which is taught during the first year. The course consists of four components including Oral Histology, Oral Anatomy, Oral Physiology and ToothMorphology. Oral biology is examined in First Professional BDS exam.

Department of oral pathology:

The Department deals with the nature, identification and management of diseases affecting the oral and maxillofacial region. The course is taught during the third year of BDS. The department provides an overview of oral and maxillofacial pathology including the clinical Histopathology and radiographic presentation of Oral diagnosis and pathogenesis. The study of microscope, tissue processing, diagnostic tests and advanced techniques are also included. This department is headed by Assistant Professor Dr. Faiza Hassan.

Department of dental Materials:

Department of dental materials provides Students are given hands on training in the manipulation and usage of various dental materials in an effort to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and clinical application. It is hoped that students will be able to apply their knowledge of materials science to the clinical setting including fundamentals and mechanisms governing the behavior of dental materials used in daily practice. It is taught during 2nd year and is headed by Associate Professor Dr Sidra Aamer.

Department of community Dentistry:

Department of Community Dentistry also known as Dental Public Health aims to educate students on the etiology, history and epidemiology of common dental diseases in order to prevent and control them. To help students understand public health programs, the planning and organizational evaluation of dental services are outlined to them. Basic research methods and statistical principles required in dental research and epidemiology are also covered. It is taught during 2nd year and is headed by Assistant Professor Dr. Omar Niaz.

DEPARTMENT OF CLINICAL SCIENCES

Department of oral surgery and maxillofacial surgery: Oral and maxillofacial surgery (OMF) is a specialty of dentistry, which focuses on diagnosis and treatment of broad range of oral disorders affecting the facial skeleton including teeth, oral cancers, temporomandibular joint problems, salivary gland diseases, congenital facial disproportions, orthognathic surgery, cleft lip and palate, benign pathologies jaw. Recently the specialty evolved immensely and now surgeons are trained in reconstructive surgeries, micro vascular surgeries, craniofacial surgeries & cosmetic surgeries. Prof. Dr, Muhammad Azhar Sheikh is heading the department of oral & maxillofacial surgery at FUCD. OMFS specialty is being taught as a major dental subject in final year. Undergraduate students from 3rd & 4th year BDS are up skill in clinical area for dealing with extraction, dental emergency management, minor surgical procedures, surgical extractions, biopsies, management of precancerous lesions, cyst etc along with ethical training. The department was approved for FCPS Oral & maxillofacial surgeries by CPSP in January 2015.

Department of Orthodontics:

The department of orthodontics primarily deals with diagnosis, prevention, and correction of malpositioned teeth and jaws. The department provides educational andclinical services having full spectrum of Orthodontic treatments including Cleft lip and Palate, Orthognathic Surgery cases, Class I,II,III malocclusions, Growth modifications and Interceptive treatments etc.Department is recognized for FCPS training and is headed by Associate Professor Dr. Afeef umar zia.

Department of Prosthodontics:

Prosthodontics Department deals with all types of artificial prosthesis of the head and neck , primarily jaws and teeth. Removable and fixed prosthesis are made in accordance with patient personal needs and demands.It is equipped with a prosthetic and a ceramic laboratory to provide patients with international trends and modernized treatment options. This department is headed by Assistant Professor Dr. Wasiq riaz.

Department of Periodontics:

The department prides itself on the pursuit of excellence in all aspects of academic & clinical Periodontics including prevention, diagnosis and treatment of periodontal diseases. Procedures performed include Non-surgical periodontal therapy, Surgical periodontal therapy including Gingivectomy, crown lengthening procedures, periodontal splinting, mucogingival surgeries, resective and regenerative procedures etc. it is taught during 3rd year and is headed by Senior Registrar Dr. Sadia Musharraf.

Department of Operative dentistry:

The department deals mainly with conservation and restoration of teeth utilizing different operative and endodontic procedures(such as fillings, onlay, inlays, crowns, rcts, pulpotomies, direct/indirect pulp capping, rercts, surgical endodontics). Apart from this various esthetics procedures such as bleaching, micro/macroabrasion, direct and indirect veneering, aesthetic crowning are carried out to improve smiles everyday. This Department is headed by Associate Professor Dr. Nadia Amman.

Department of oral medicine:

Department of Oral medicine deals with area of special competence in dentistry concerned mainly with diseases involving the oral and peri oral structures, especially the oral mucosa and the oral manifestation of systemic diseases. It also includes diagnosis and treatment of diseases involving orofacial tissues and dental treatment of medically compromised patients. This department is headed by Assistant Professor Dr Muhammad Umair.

Foundation University Institute of Rehabilitation Sciences (FUIRS)

FUIRS was established in year 2014 offering a 5 year Doctor of Physical Therapy program, which has been developed on modern lines. Initially FUIRS Students and Faculty were housed in FUCD & FUMC but now a state of the art building of FUIRS is near completion. Dr. Naureen Tassadaq is currently working as Director/ Associate Dean (Clinical) of FUIRS where as Dr. Furqan Ahmed Siddiqi is leading charge as Associate Dean (Academics). Since conception FUIRS has taken a lead role in Physical therapy and rehabilitation science community as trend setters by introducing proper policies and guidelines, establishing Clinical trial registry administrators, arranging Conferences, seminars and health camps etc. The Doctor of physical therapy program offered by FUIRS is It-self designed in a manner to fulfill the future requirements of the market and equip the graduates to meet challenges in times to come. Graduates of the Doctor of Physical therapy Programme will be able to demonstrate in-depth knowledge of the basic and clinical sciences relevant to Physical therapy, both in their fundamental context and in their application to the discipline of Physical therapy. FUIRS has a total of 23 Faculty members including 1 Associate professor, 5 Assistant Professors, 4 Senior Lecturer, 5 Lecturers and 8 Demonstrators. Till date FUIRS has inducted a total of 9 batches and nearly 450 Students.

Fauji Foundation Hospital (FFH)

The Fauji Foundation Hospital, Rawalpindi (A Teaching Hospital of FUMC) with the capacity of 750 beds is the flagship of Fauji Foundation Welfare Health Projects with an annual budget of about Rs. 2.4 billion.

Introduction of internationally accepted problem-based learning methodology

FUMC has introduced an internationally accepted Integrated Curriculum from 2009.

FUMC is the fourth institution after Agha Khan University, Shifa Medical College and Army Medical College to introduce this teaching methodology in Pakistan.

Collaborations and memberships

The University of Yamanashi Faculty of Medicine (Japan), signed an academic agreement with FUMC for research collaboration, faculty development and student exchange in 2005.

The college is listed in the International Medical Education Directory and is a member of the International Association of Medical Regulatory Authority. The college has been included in the World Directory of Medical Schools by WHO, making its students eligible to appear in the United States Medical Licensing Examination and the United Kingdom Professional and Linguistic Assessments Board.
