Fleabag is a British comedy-drama television series set in London. It was produced by Two Brothers Pictures for digital channel BBC Three[1] in a co-production agreement with Amazon Studios.[2] The show premiered on 21 July 2016.[3] Show creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge writes and stars as the main character, Fleabag, an angry, confused young woman attempting to navigate life in London.

A second series is planned for 2019.[4]

Background

The show is adapted from Waller-Bridge's 2013 Edinburgh Festival Fringe one-woman play of the same name which won the Fringe First Award.[5][6][7] The initial idea of the character of Fleabag came from a challenge by a friend, where Waller-Bridge was tasked with creating a sketch for a 10-minute section in a stand-up storytelling night.[8]

Series Two (2019)

At the 2017 Broadcasting Press Guild awards, Waller-Bridge confirmed that a second series was planned, and that she expected filming to begin in November 2017 for an expected release in 2018, and that "we are all trying to make it work and have the same team back."[9] However it was later confirmed by the BBC that Fleabag would be returning in 2019.[4]

Following the initial release on BBC Three the series was broadcast on BBC Two between 21 August and 25 September 2016. It was picked up by the on-demand Amazon Video service and premiered in the United States on 16 September 2016.[7][10]

Critical reception

Fleabag was well received by television critics. The review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes gives the first series an approval rating of 100%, based on 32 reviews, with an average rating of 8.44/10. The site's critical consensus reads, "Clever and viciously funny, Fleabag is a touching, wildly inventive comedy about a complicated young woman navigating the aftermath of trauma."[11] On Metacritic, the first series holds a score of 88 out of 100, based on 19 critics, which constitutes "universal acclaim".[12]

Emily Nussbaum of The New Yorker described it "a precision black-humor mechanism, a warped and affecting fable about one single woman's existence."[13] Mo Ryan at Variety called it scathingly funny.[14] Mike Hale in The New York Times praised the show for its "restless, almost feral energy and its slap-in-the-face attitude."[15] Tim Goodman from The Hollywood Reporter saw the show as "heralding a very distinctive new voice on television."[16]
