Elections in Armenia gives information on election and election results in Armenia.

Armenia elects on national level a head of state - the president - and a legislature. Up to now the president was elected for a five-year term by the people (absolute majority with 2nd round if necessary). According to new constitution this will be changed in 2018.

Armenia has a multi-party system, with numerous parties in which no one party often has a chance of gaining power alone, and parties must work with each other to form coalition governments.

Electoral system

Election of National Assembly

National Assembly consists of at least 101 seats and is elected with a two-tier party list proportional representation method.[1][2] It reserves 50% of votes cast in favor of each party to be distributed via party lists.

Out of these in first place 4 mandates will be assigned to national minorities, if they are included on party lists. A party list can not include over 70% of representatives of the same sex and its segment from the top (and a length of any multiple of 4) must include at least 25% members of each sex.

Another 50% of votes received by each party will be distributed among their territorial lists submitted in 13 electoral districts.

If neither party wins over 50% of mandates and no coalition is built with 6 days after the election results announcement a second round of elections will be carried out. After first round two best-placed parties are allowed to participate in the second round. All mandates received as per first round will be preserved. The party which wins second round of elections will be given additional number of mandates to reach 54% all seats.

If any party or bloc wins over 2/3 of mandates in the first round of elections sufficient additional mandates will be distributed among all other parties to ensure that at least 1/3 of all seats are given to parties other than the winning one.

Due to additional seats given to winning party or other parties total number of seats in National Assembly can be higher and reach about 200 in rare circumstances.[3]

Parties need to pass 5% and blocs 7% threshold respectively to be included in mandate distribution.
