Cy-Fair High School is a secondary school located in Cypress, which is an unincorporated place in Harris County, Texas, near Houston. The school, located along U.S. Highway 290, is part of the Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District.

History

The Cypress and Fairbanks school districts (an area now in northwest Houston) consolidated in 1939. Cy-Fair High School was opened in the spring of 1941 and received some national acclaim after being dedicated by then First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt. The first principal was Matthew Solomon, PhD. Cy-Fair High School remained the only high school (not including Carverdale High School, the African-American school prior to integration) in the Cy-Fair CSD (now ISD) until Jersey Village High School opened in 1972. There are now 12 high schools in CFISD.

The school, which had expanded for several decades beyond the original 1941 design, was modernized after the 1999-2000 school year. Additional classrooms were added during the renovation to. The façade at the front main doors remain.

In 2017, as part of high school rezoning, a portion of Cy-Fair's attendance zone will be reassigned to Cypress Ranch High School.[2][3]

Additional Information

The school has approximately 35 active student clubs, including Model United Nations, Magic the Gathering, National Honor Society, and one of the largest Key Clubs in the state of Texas. Seventy percent of Cy-Fair High School graduates go on to college.

Cy-Fair competes athletically in District 17-6A of the University Interscholastic League.


In 2008 The Girls' Basketball team defeated DeSoto to win their first ever State Championship. The Lady Bobcats repeated as State Champs in 2010.

The 1970-71 Boys' basketball team was the Texas State Champ and voted as the National Champions. The boys' basketball team also went to the Final Four in 1969-70 and 1977-78.

In football the 1985 team finished 13-1-1 losing to perinneal power Odessa Permian 7-10 in the state semifinals.

The 1987 football team finished 9-4-1 advancing to the state quarterfinals before losing to eventual state champion Plano 21-24. The previous week's game versus undefeated 12-0 North Mesquite was voted "Game of the Decade" by the Houston Chronicle. At the time, Texas high school football had no overtime, instead the winner of a tie game was determined by statistics. The first tiebreaker was penetrations inside the 20 yard line, the second first downs, and the third total yards. With less than two minutes left in the fourth quarter, North Mesquite and Cy-Fair were tied 21-21. The teams were also tied in penetrations 5-5 but North Mesquite was ahead in first downs 21-16. In a gutsy move, Head Coach Warren Trahan instructed his defense to let the North Mequite offense score so his offense would have a chance to tie the game and win by penetrations. Cy-Fair scored with two seconds left to tie the game and advance to the quarterfinals by way of a 6-5 advantage in penetrations.

The Cy-Fair High School Band placed 14th in the 2014 State Finals in San Antonio, Texas, and 17th in the 2015 Bands of America Super Regional in San Antonio, Texas.

Cy-Fair High School is the only CFISD high school with a hyphen in its official name.[4]

Cy-Fair High School was named an Honor Roll School by the Just For Kids/TBEC (Texas Business and Education Coalition) for the 2nd year in a row. Only 1 of 12 schools in the state of Texas selected based on high academic standards for 3 consecutive years.

ROTC was recognized as one of the outstanding units in the state – rarely awarded to a first year program

Athletics – wins 10 District titles

44 Juniors and 9 Sophomores made 200 Club for PSAT

Cy-Fair High School had more National Merit Finalists than any other high school in the Cypress Fairbanks Independent School District for the 2010-2011 school year.

Cy-Fair High School won its first football state championship in 2017.
