The 2013 Croatian local elections were held on 19 May and the second round was held on 2 June. The turnout was 47% (run-offs: 43%). The outgoing Split mayor Željko Kerum came out third with 18,54% of the vote, in the second round the Socialist candidate won narrowly over the HDZ-one (49,1:48,2). In Zagreb Milan Bandić, a Populist Right-Wing and former Social Democrat, won 47,9% of the vote against Social Democrat Health Minister Rajko Ostojić's 22,7%, with Vladimir Ferdelji (HSS-HSLS-Green List) coming in third with 17,3% and HDZ candidate Margareta Mađerić fourth at 5,4%. Bandic finally received a two-third majority - as in Rijeka the outgoing Social Democrat mayor Vojko Obersnel (first turn 48%). In Slavonia's largest city, Osijek, mayor Krešimir Bubalo (HDSSB) won 36,3%, and faced independent (backed by SDP&...) Ivan Vrkić, who gained 27,8%, in a run-off which was won by the latter. Out of the 21 county prefects 9 were elected in the first round (7 HDZ and coalition partners, 2 SDP and coalition partners). After the run-offs there were no Zupan-changes (only SDP lost Međimurje to its small ally HNS). There are now governed by a Zupan of...HDZ 36%, Bandic 18%, SDP 14%, HSS 10%, HDSSB 7%, HNS 7%, IDS 5%, HDSS (=ex-HSS) 3%. Governed are by a mayor of...HDZ 32%(-2%), SDP 19%(+2%), Bandic 18%, other Independents 10%(+0,5%), HNS 6%(+3,5%), HSS 5%(-1%), IDS 4%(-0%), HDSSB 2%(-1%).

Municipalities with more than 20.000 inhabitants: HDZ: held: Zadar, Velika Gorica, Karlovac, Vinkovci, Zaprešić, Solin, Virovitica; gained: Šibenik, Kaštela, Požega; lost: Sisak, Petrinja, Kutina. SDP: held: Rijeka, Koprivnica, Vukovar, Cakovec; gained: Split, Sisak, Kutina; lost: Sibenik, Dubrovnik, Đakovo, Požega. Ind.: held: Zagreb, Sinj; gained: Osijek, Slavonski Brod; lost: Split, Kaštela. HNS: gained: Varaždin, Dubrovnik, Petrinja. HSS: held: Samobor, Križevci. IDS: held: Pula. HDSSB: gained: Đakovo; lost: Osijek. HSLS: lost: Varaždin, Bjelovar. HSP: lost: Slavonski Brod. Others: gained: Bjelovar.[1]
