Brahamdagh Khan Bugti or Brahumdagh Khan Bugti (Urdu: براہمدغ خان بگٹی) is the founder and leader of the political organization Baloch Republican Party,[1] a Baloch nationalist group which broke away from his uncle Talal Akbar Bugti's Jamhoori Watan Party in 2008. He is currently living in self exile in Switzerland.[2]

Early life

Brahamdagh Bugti was born in 1982 to Rehan Khan Bugti, the fourth son of Akbar Bugti. Rehan died a short time after Brahamdagh's birth.

According to the Balochistan Police, Brahamdagh has two wives Laila Bibi and Shuli Bibim along with four children.[2] He is from the Raheja Bugti tribe.[2]

Terrorism accusations and self exile

Bugti went into self exile in Afghanistan during a military operation Dera Bugti 2006 against the Baloch rebels. Pakistan has alleged that he has been involved in a number of terrorist attacks.[3] In 2007, Pakistani leader Pervez Musharraf claimed that Bugti had been planning terrorist attacks from Afghanistan with covert Indian and Afghan support.[4] Afghan president Hamid Karzai publicly rejected this claim, but later secretly admitted to US officials that Bugti was provided safe-haven in Kabul.[5]

In 2010 when Pakistan asked Kabul to hand him over, Bugti moved to Switzerland.[2] In 2016, it was reported that Brahamdagh Bugti had applied for Asylum in India but it was hold on by the government of India [6] However, a report back in 2010 stated he already held an Indian passport.[7] In 2017, Bugti's asylum claim was rejected by the Swiss government on the basis of Bugti's links with “incidents of terrorism, violence and militant activities".[8] Bugti alleged that Swiss authorities denied his application under pressure from the Pakistani authorities[2] and China.[9] He continues to live in Switzerland in self exile while the Pakistani authorities are trying to get him back to Pakistan.[2]
