Sibi (Balochi and Urdu: سِبی‬‎; Pashto: سيوۍ‎) or Siwei is a city situated in the Balochistan province of Pakistan. The city is the headquarters of the district and tehsil of the same name.[2]

Etymology

The origin of the town's name is attributed to Rani Sewi, a Hindu lady of the Sewa Dynasty who ruled Balochistan before the 7th century.[3]

History

The history of the Sibi region dates back to the 7th century at the earliest, when it was ruled by the Sewa dynasty.[4] In the early 13th century, Sibi was a dependency of Multan under Nasiruddin Qabacha of the Ghurid Empire. The area was then variously subject to Multan or Sindh throughout much of its history. The Arghun dynasty of Kandahar invaded in the late 15th century and seized Sibi from the Samma dynasty of Sindh, but it was returned to Sindh during the Mughal period.[5][6] Sibi was governed by the Kalhora dynasty during the early 18th century, which in turn paid tribute to the Afsharids after Nader Shah's invasion in 1737. In 1747, the Durrani Empire assumed control of Sibi[7] and appointed local administrators from the Barozai clan.[8]

Post-Independence Period:

Besides the town of Sibi, the district once included the hill station of Ziarat, the summer residence of the government[9] and The Victoria Memorial Hall, now known as Jirga Hall,[10] which was built in 1903.[11]

Geography

Lying between the longitude of 29.33°—29.55°N and the latitude of 67.53°—67.88°E, Sibi is situated on the adjoining point of the Indus Plains and Suleman Ranges which lie to the north of the city, in a fertile alluvial plain with many small streams and rivers coming from the mountains in the north and northeast.

The city is bounded by the mountainous districts of Ziarat in the north, Loralai in the northeast, Kohlu in the east, Bolan in the south and south-west and has a small border with Mastung district in North-west through Dasht tehsil of Mastung.

Sibi is 25 km from the town of Dhadhar and 160 km from the provincial capital Quetta via the National Highway. The cities of Dera Murad Jamali, Jacobabad and Sukkur can be reached by driving on the National Highway 118 km, 145 km and 236 km respectively.

Inside the limits of Sibi District, Sibi is bounded by many villages, some of them being the tehsil headquarters.

Sibi is adjacent to the River Nari which flows from the north to the east of the city. It is surrounded by the villages of Luni, GuluShahar, Kurak, Khajak, Talli, Marghazani, Safi, Dehpal and Bakhra.

Sibi also has a small airport to the northwest.

The Sibbi Cantonment is located in the entire western portion of the city; the railway runs parallel to the cantonment. The remaining areas of the city are divided into five residential and commercial areas:

North: Luni Road, Chakar Road, Landa Bazaar, Mirchi Bazaar, Gulshan Colony, Livestock Market and Rind colony.

East: Mostly offices and wealthy areas of the city. Residency Road, Jinnah Town,Civil Hospital, FC Scouts, Commissioner House, Circuit House Jail Road, Toghi Road (Thandi Sarak), High Court and the Degree College.

Centre: It is mainly the commercial area containing almost all the markets of the city,Masjid Road,Johar Road,Jinnah Road,Nashtar Road,Iqbal Road.

Southeast: Mainly residential areas, including Ghareebabad, Gishkori Mohulla, TV Boaster Colony, Sibi Mela ground and Sibi Stadium.

Southwest: Includes Bolan Market, Old Bus Stop, Allahabad Road, Bukhari Ground and TNT.

Demographics

The main ethnic groups of the area are: Baloch, Jamots and Pashtoons. Sindhi people living in Baluchistan are called Jamot.

Baloch tribes include: Domki, Marri, Gola, Chandio, Gishkori, Gorgage, Rind, and Ghulam Bolak, Mandwani.

Major tribes of Pashtoon residing in the area are: Khajjak, Marghzani, Silachi, Saafi, Mizri, Dehpal, Barozai, and Luni.

Major Jamot (Sindhi) tribes include: Soomro, Abro, Dayo, Mangrio, Mahar, and Solangi.

Major Punjabi clans include: Bhatti Rajput, Rana Rajput, Arain, Malik, Butt, Choudary, Khokhar, and Mughal.

Major Brahvi tribes include: Raisani, Bangulzai, GohramZai, Mohummad Shahi, and Lehri.

Major Urdu speaking surnames may include: Quraishi, Sheikh, Siddiqui, Abbasi, Ansari, and Yousaf Zai.

Siraiki's include Jamali, Machi, Hanbhi and Langah but almost all of them are ethnically diverse.

Minorities include Hindus, Christians, and small groups of nomadic people who live mainly in the huts on western corner of the city, (such as the Lachi and Bhagri people with their own indigenous beliefs and rituals)

Religion

97% of the population of the city are followers of Islam (95% Sunni and 5% Shia), 2% are Hindus and 1% are Christians.

Festivals

Sibi Mela is celebrated every February and has been observed since the 16th century.

Climate

Sibi has globally record high temperatures especially in the month of June with an average of 52 °C, in the afternoon. Precipitation is light and mainly falls in two distinct periods: early spring in March and April, and during monsoon season in July and August.
